Well I just saw something pretty interesting. Here in western MA, the moon just set. At 9:50 PM. Wait, what?
Seriously, I'm usually awake well past midnight, and at, like, 4 AM, it'll still be pretty high up. This has been the case very recently - including, you know, yesterday. It also had a neat orange/red tint today ^^ Anyone else at all notice this? Can someone offer me the scientifical explanation? Also, here are the pictures I managed to take, in between about 9:35 and 9:50. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The fact that you said "scientifical explanation" makes me think you really don't want to know what the actual answer is and are just showing us some cool pics. Correct me if I'm wrong, though, and I'll "let" you know the answer.

I don't often cite Wikipedia as a source for science, but...

It's actually caused by something called the Ponzo Illusion. Here's a good article put into layman's terms about that: http://unmuseum.mus.pa.us/exmoon.htm
...and of course some Wikipedia action (or else this "research" just wouldn't be complete): Wiki #1 (Ponzo Illusion) Wiki #2 (Moon Illusion) |
