It's a typo; Siren Visual did some releases in NTSC, and this is one of them. I can confirm that personally, and if you don't want to take my word for it, check this review for confirmation (paragraph 3 in the "On to the discs" section).

Yes my player has PAL conversion but even though I would be getting more picture than NTSC I prefer to watch things in the framerate they were intended to be seen.

DVDs released in Japan using NTSC just like North America is one of those rare situations that works out well for some of the OVA (OAD) DVD-releases I've purchased like One Punch Man (even if it's actually 24p or 24i but always like the assurance)

Good to know about the Australian Monster DVD being NTSC. Still would prefer a Blu-ray even if it's an upscale.

Looks like they've added the missing episodes to Netflix.

This finished releasing in Germany last month with the sixth and final volume:

KSM also offer a hard slipcase (with a hardcover booklet) for the releases on their webshop:

https://anime-planet.de/monster-samm...dcover-booklet

Back in April, KSM also posted both a trailer and the complete first episode in 1080p HD with the German dub, which I understand is new for the Blu-ray and comes in DTS-HD MA 5.1 (Unfortunately, these videos are blocked outside of German-speaking Europe):

The remaster looks quite nice and all the onscreen text seems to be in Japanese. If I recall correctly, the Australian DVDs have onscreen text in English. The German dub seems to fit well and it sounds highly detailed. It would be terrific to get English subtitles for it, as I wonder if there are differences between the Japanese original and the German audio.

I would love to watch it in the language of the characters. So would definitely love an English sub for the German dub. Although I wonder the quality of the dub.

I bought the series but have only watched it in japanese so far. I can check the dub later but I won't have time until tonight (that's at least 10 hours from now, no idea which timezone you're in)

You know...I actually did something similar for Le Chevalier D'Eon. I went out of my way to try and find a French dub of the series with the English subs on hand. Eventually, a friend of mine helped out...and, well...

Let's just say I never did anything like that again.

Agreed I own the entire manga physically it’s a masterpiece of a manga series and would love for Discotek to get the rights to the anime as I still need to watch the anime series. Is the show still on YouTube? If it is I definitely need to watch it hopefully this year. I absolutely adore the manga it’s amazing

Germany and Spain are the only two countries internationally to have announced physical media rights to Monster. If anything, I think the likelihood of it getting license rescued in North America (or the UK) is better.

I assume nobody owns the rights to this in any English speaking territories as of now, and rather curiously, the dub never surfaced when it went to Netflix, so I wonder if there's any behind the scenes issues with it (whether it be the dub or physical media release).

If a UK Blu Ray or heck a Discotek Blu Ray gets announced I'll buy it immediately as it will be amazing news and I'll be very excited to watch it.

This would be the holy grail of the show for me. The English Dub with the original Japanese release music. I guess it's likely never to happen though.

Furthermore I wish they'd release the full soundtrack of all the music in the show with the actual show renditions of those tracks. The OSTs are largely disappointing because they're not complete, and the arrangements of some of the tracks aren't the same as what play in the show, they're special arrangements for the OST and I hate it when shows/films/games do this. If I buy OST it's because I want to hear the music I heard in the show, I don't want re-arranged versions.

I'm surprised after all these years nobody has picked this series up and given it another US release. Discotek or AnimEigo

It's definitely not because the show isn't fantastic. I've always heard over the years that there were licensing issues with Monster. Add in that it failed when VIZ tried and I can understand why no one has taken the risk. IIRC, Master Keaton and Yawara! didn't do well either. I thought both were great too, but I don't know that either would get another chance. Unfortunately, I think anime based off Urasawa's work are just cursed to not do well here.

There were also two live-action projects at one point (a series for HBO and a movie). The movie fell apart, but del Toro potentially still has rights to make the series, since as of 2022 he was still shopping it around (HBO passed on the series). Makes me wonder if the situation is similar to James Cameron and Battle Angel (no re-release of the Battle Angel OVA). Of course, Monster being up on Netflix probably isn't helping matters either. For all we know, the home video rights could have been bundled with the streaming rights and Netflix is just going to sit on them till those rights expire.

Naoki Urasawa works are beloved in Japan, which means they’re expensive to license. There’s also a good chance the home video rights are tied up with Netflix, but I think it’s only a matter of time before Monster gets another go on physical media in North America and the UK. I think Anime Limited, GKIDS, or Sentai are more likely to get them however.
