Angry Smallville (Warner) not utilizing BD50 well enough

How can we win this war when Warner is only using one encode, using the lowest common denominator that being HD-DVD for our BD50 discs? why not max out BD50 as a second encode, and drop your production to 3 discs instead of four?

HD-DVD version is 4 disc as well, that means BD is getting the shaft of about 80gb of unused space. This does not help us much.

You are over reacting. If Warner wanted to have one episode on a disc, then they would. It isn't a big deal because the real way to prove blu-rays superiority, is to have more support. The best way to show that is for the BD release of Smallville outsell the HD Smallville. It doesn't matter how discs there are in a release.

Also, the search feature of the forums is darn near useless. When I type in a search, I get the most recent post with those words in it. Not helping when I am looking for a specific topic, if I was looking for the last time a word was used in the forum, then maybe the search would be usefull. Instead of closing threads because it has already been discussed, try and help by directing to the original thread so the information can be shared.

HD-DVD version has 5 Disc, Blu-ray Version has only 4.

So are you going to pony up $3-500,000 for a second encode on a set likely to sell maybe 10,000 units this year?

I see that amazon has 5 discs as their details for RED. while highdefdigest.com has 4-discs for RED.

you could produce less discs with BD50 (vs. HD30), which will make up the cost difference in theory.

The discs cost a few dollars each. No, you can't

It's what's on the discs that's expensive, not the physical media. You still have the raw expense to encode (per minute) no matter how many discs it ends up on.

Essentially, with what I'm saying is, if BD were the only format, we would have higher video bitrates for all our movies, but with HD-DVD still in the game, I know it's very hesitant and almost an absolute "no" for a company to make 2 encodes, because they just figure "let's go with the smaller cheaper one"

Thanx for the clarification on # of discs (the warner URL)

just a question, when people refer to red, are they talking about hd-dvd or dvd? because i was under the impression that both blu and hd use blue lazers.

If you use the advanced search function you have MUCH more control over what your looking for. You can search in specific areas of the forum and choose to search only thread titles, and by username. The filters work wonders!

Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray use blue lazers.

When people refer to red, they're refering to the case a HD-DVD is in.

HD-DVDs are in a red case
Blu-rays are in a blue case

It's a shame Warner doesn't do separate encodes.

Hell, after we were all "paramounted" a few weeks ago (and not even kissed for that matter) I am just happy as hell that Warner is staying the format neutral course.

I think I've been the most vocal about Smallville on this and most Blu-ray sites, and I can safely say I'm not too worried really.

I think Warner have learnt their lesson from the horribly bit-starved encodes of season 5 on HD DVD, plus VC-1 has improved somewhat since then (for example, the difference between the US & UK editions of Serenity).

I really think these episodes will have 4 star reviews at least!

Really looking forward to some Clark vs Zod/Clark vs Bizarro/Justice League High-def action, man!

I think we can all agree on one thing about the color. It is simply the ugly cousin of blu-ray. I could see a nice crystal red making for a lovely display, but they totally turded on the color choice.

Where is a good hurling emote when I need one?
