I wasn't trying to call RahXephon a rip off or anything, just that they have many similarities:
Angels / Dolems Misato / Haruka Rei / Quon Trauma from emotionally detached parents Convoluted story with [Show spoiler] Follow-up movie with "true ending" Obviously, they differ in their approaches and are entirely different shows but, even if superficially, they are the same type of show. |

I've mentioned liking Mobile Suit Gundam The 08th MS Team.
Patlabor Movie 2 was a recent watch that surprised me by turning out very different than expected. Nice art, with a pace and storytelling rather unlike any typical mech show (the mechs see little screen time). Hey, it takes me ages to watch stuff! (I still haven't even started my dusty sets of Aquarion, Votoms, Voltron, Gargantia, Str.A.In, Majestic Prince, Turn A Gundam... ![]() |

This is what I’ve read from staff interviews. It’s a more obscure reference point for a lot of American viewers because it’s not as well known in the states. After reading about Brave Raideen, I appreciated RahXephon as a modern riff on alot of similar ideas.

Definitely check out the movie if you haven't. It's a basic "greatest hits" compilation of the series but has extra scenes that give a sort of extended insight to those events. They don't line up 1:1 with the series but are worth seeing in addition to the new ending.

Finally watched it after sitting in the backlog for nearly 5 years and I feel bad that I had neglected it for so long since it was a blast! It's like the Airplane! version of Gundam with nonstop screwball and slapstick comedy. BD is long oop and prices are obscene, but I wholeheartedly recommend watching it however you can! |

Dai-Guard
Finished it yesterday and while I didn't like it that much, I'm mentioning it for its unique concept. The story goes that the mech was developed a dozen years ago in response to the 1st alien appearance but they never showed up again. Eventually, the mech was sold to an insurance company which uses it as a giant showpiece/mascot. Now the aliens are back and it's terribly outdated to deal with them. Overall, it's a more realistic take on a mech show. The Dai-Guard looks flashy but is slow and clunky, has no real weapons, can't fly, needs constant refueling, and has to be transported in pieces and assembled for every outing (one episode pokes fun at this with it having to be disassembled numerous times to get across mountains). The pilots are just regular employees of the company, and even though it doesn't get much focus, I liked how they had different roles: 1 controls the mech, another watches the instruments, and the other manages the energy balances. The show is mostly comedic but spotlights the struggles of the regular people having to deal with a disaster: evacuations, ruins and pollution, relief lines, etc. There's also the bureaucracy of the company and the board trying to save money by trying to cut costs and damage payouts, much to the detriment of the mech's efficiency. |

I really do need to get back to Patlabor (the TV series). Everything I’ve seen of Patlabor as a whole so far has been great (well, maybe not WXIII so much…).
It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Dai-Guard, but I do have to agree - I don’t love it, but it does get bonus points for the concept. |

Godannar if you want a nice mecha show that's also mad horny and well animated throughout. Gun X Sword if you want something more dramatic but with the same character designs and somewhat similar levels of horny in some episodes.
Gaogaigar if you can handle rapid strobe lighting its a fun series, real likable cast, story turns out to be more than meets the eye and again from the same character designer and the level of horny slowly rising as the series gradually continues into the OVAs where it goes insane. |
