The set has nearly every episode up until Sandy’s Country Christmas, including Mid-Life Crustacean. Kwarantined Krab is missing, and Just One Bite and SpongeBob in RandomLand are still censored.

Why are these missing and censored? Sorry haven't been caught up in SB news in a long time.

Mid-Life Crustacean was removed from streaming services (Paramount+, Amazon Prime, etc.) a few years ago because of the panty raid scene. The only legal way to watch the episode now is on DVD (or if you find a digital purchase option that still has the episode up).

Just One Bite was censored shortly after its original airing to remove a joke about a gas explosion; the uncensored version has rarely been seen since then.

The original version of SpongeBob in RandomLand had a reference to “Red Mist Squidward” from a creepypasta whose name I’m not sure if the forum allows me to mention. It was quickly replaced with a baby Squidward in re-airings of the episode.

Kwarantined Krab was completed in early 2020, before COVID, but it was not aired until 2022 due to the theme of the episode. The episode was not included on the Season 12 DVD (which was released in 2021), but it has not shown up on any future DVDs. Unlike Mid-Life Crustacean, this episode is available on streaming services.

Kwarantined Krab was really funny. Such a shame they decided to keep it off of DVD.

This show debuted a few years after I had stopped watching Nickelodeon and I've been wanting to watch the first few seasons. It sounds like a case of Rugrats where I may just watch the first three seasons and call it a day.

I'd recommend the First 100 Episodes set, it's about $20 and has the first 5 seasons.

Could also pick up the two-season sets, they're $7.50 each. Seasons 1/2, Seasons 3/4

Thanks. Curious if compression is the same on all of these sets or in other words if more episodes aren't crammed on discs. I wouldn't mind getting the best archival possible for classic Nick shows, even if this one was outside of the era I watched.

The individual seasons 1-3 spread the episodes across three discs each (between four and eight episodes out of 20). The 100 episodes set has new discs with eight episodes each, regardless of season designation (17-20 of season 1 and 1-4 of season 2, for example). The franchise’s wiki has thorough listings of each DVD set and what each disc contains.

The initial three are definitely classics, but there are still some gems, particularly in some of the last few seasons where they get more expressive with the animation. Also the quality drop isn't massive at first, the last stretch of season three is pretty equal to the start of season four, but there is a point it starts to stagnate.

Is the series mostly 480i or 480p?

The early seasons were 480i (mix of 24, 30fps and 60i effects) before migrating to HD 24fps around 2010. There were widescreen specials around 2007 still finished in 480p 24fps, but wasn't until around 2009 the series as a whole switched to it from 4x3.

Something that bugs me about this show is that season 2 episodes have unusually pale colors on most DVDs, including the season set and The First 100 Episodes. Instead of SpongeBob looking yellow, he’s instead colored with a pale, yellowish beige. Streaming services (and some TV airings) fix this issue, but the DVDs are stuck with PaleBob.

Actually the series didn't fully switch to 16:9 until 2012 with Season 9, and the only widescreen special (that wasn't the stopmotion Christmas special) before that was Truth or Square in 2009.

Yeah the first three seasons (5 years) and the first movie is where I draw the line. I’m glad people still enjoy the show, but I could definitely tell something was “off” starting with season 4.

Just like with Rugrats lol. I was probably around 9-10 years old when it was revived and even back then I could tell that there was something off about it.
