Screen Digest says studios should release films in both high-def disc formats.
http://www.tvpredictions.com/studios091707.htm Quote “The company says studios would make more money by releasing their films in both high-def disc formats. As of now, four major studios back Blu-ray exclusively while Paramount and Universal back HD DVD exclusively.” Quote “Screen Digest said Sony, Fox and Disney, which back Blu-ray exclusively, could lose $175 million next year by not releasing films on HD DVD as well.” Quote “Screen Digest says that once the studios realize that both formats will survive, they will decide to release films in Blu-ray and HD DVD. "We believe that eventually most will decide to offer their titles on both HD DVD and BD in order to maximize their returns." the company said.” Studios that support either BLU-RAY or HD-DVD exclusively have decided to remain exclusive to either BLU-RAY or HD-DVD. If all studios started releasing movies on both formats then both HD-DVD and BLU-RAY would coexist for years just like the BETA and VHS format did. Yes in increased short term profits can be made releasing in both formats like Warner is doing. But in the long run if every studio decided to back BLU-RAY because it was the best format for picture and sound quality then several millions of BLU-RAY players would be sold since we would see widespread consumer adoption. Also with fully functional dual format players coming on the market studios may not want to go neutral. If films were released in both formats then most people would still purchase BLU-RAY players since Toshiba is currently the only manufactory (others coming soon) that makes HD-DVD players. When consumers see over 6 brands of BLU-RAY players to choose from at retail and only one brand of HD-DVD player that sends a message. The only thing that is keeping HD-DVD alive is its two exclusive studios. |

The more I see co-existance spouted from HD-DVD supporters, the more I know the end is near. An HD-DVD "victory" is all but impossible without more payoffs to studios.

I agree completely. They are now trying to play nice because they realize the end is drawing closer. They have to realize there are winners and losers and HD-DVD is losing this war. It's just life. Let's continue to show our support by purchasing qualities titles from the neautral studios as well.

I like the fact that Disney has finalized its release list for the year. Free up more lines for Fox and Warner production. I'd love to see the BDA give it up to Warner and let them maximize their profits.

The ONLY way I wouldn't mind that all studio release titles for both formats is if each studio did a COMPLETELY seperate encode to take advantage of Blu-ray's specs (i.e. ALL extras in HD, the best lossless audio, and max out the video bit rate). People don't like know that they are buying the inferior version of a title for the same amount of money. That would make the HD DVD owners feel they are overpaying for their product. Therefore, more people would buy Blu-ray.

I'm trying to remember one thing when we win. NOT TO BE A SORE WINNER. I don't want to flaunt it in their faces, or say, "We told you so." Welcome them with open arms. The last thing we need is an angry captive audience. They fought a good fight but the better format won.

The only reason HDDVD has started this new propaganda campaign of 'both formats surviving' is to attempt to make it an easier transition for their current customers when then end comes. They know it's coming, they just want to be sure they don't have animosity from their customers towards their one and only brand: Toshiba.

It's hard to buy Blu-rays from the neutral studios because
(1) they do not put lossless audio tracks on their Blu-ray releases. (2) Some indifference with PQ on the catalog releases (Universal is particularly guilty of this). |

The Funny thing about this stupid and ignorant report is that it's consumers and retailers that are going to decide what format to have. They will not coexist and retailers are already displaying what format to carry. I was in Suncoast motion picture company. They have always had two rows of BluRay and 2 rows of Hddvd. Today they had 6 rows of BluRay and two of Hddvd. I asked the manager if they were seeing more Bluray sales and he said yes, and there is just more titles planned for bluray and that is what we are going with. Same at Target, Some Bestbuys. I think retail companies know they need to act now and force people to choose a side that is already winning and has been since the beginning of the year. In the just the last two weeks there have just been too many announcements of support for bluray. HDDUD will not last. This isn't Xbox games and PS3 games. There are a hell of alot more people out there buying movies than there are buying and playing games. I hated reading this report, it just dripped with ignorance...it was like some HDDUD fanboy was given a microphone to talk. Anyways......SEPT. 18, BluRay is gonna blow it up!
