Default Tom Cruise may have a role in a Peter Jackson film

Hey,

Posted this in the Hobbit Update Thread, thought some of you may miss on this crazy news.

Here Goes:

Quote:
The occasional “take a meeting’ report pops up, and the story is always the same. Movie player A sits down with movie player B in what we assume is some official manner, none of us onlookers really knows why they’re meeting and therefore, wild speculation ensues. They’re interesting stories, I think, and not because a number of them later translate into something more concrete but because a good deal of them don’t. It’s like a tiny tear has opened in space-time and we’ve caught a glimpse at a never-was bizzaro world, a collaboration that never happened.

Movie player A in this case is Tom Cruise and B is Peter Jackson. Is there really nothing else we know about why they might be meeting? Well… not quite nothing.

…but as near as. Here’s a little bit of informed guesswork that brings some knowledge into play. Contribute any additions of your own in the comments.

The big Peter Jackson story of the moment is the continued development of The Hobbit. Could Cruise be looking to play a role in del Toro’s upcoming films? It’s an outside bet, I feel. Extremely outside. For one thing, Guillermo del Toro was not present himself. If we assume for a second that Cruise and Jackson’s business in the meeting was one of Hobbit casting, what character would Cruise be eyeing anyway? The voice of Smaug? The One Ring speculate The Necromancer, a facet of Sauron who is talked of in The Hobbit but doesn’t actually have anything to do. I guess they’re pulling legs.

Jackson is also producing and not directing the Dambusters film. This seems more of an easy match with Cruise’s acting style and perceived persona. Again, though, Christian Rivers was not present and he is, or at least was, the director in charge of the Dambusters. A considerably better fit than the Hobbit, though.

Another film we’d assume Jackson would be producing would be a District 9 sequel. I’m not even going to dignify this lunatic digression with any further discussion. And as for the H word… don’t even dream it.

Perhaps we’ll have more luck looking towards films that Jackson is going to direct and not just produce. The first of these to come to mind is probably the Tintin sequel. Though Jackson has made it clear that scripting on the film has yet to begin, locking down a busy man like Cruise this far ahead of time is probably a good idea. They may have just been kicking around the notion, taking its temperature, seeing if it would be worth Jackson’s time developing the film with Cruise in mind. A possibility. Who would Cruise be playing? I guess that depends on just what Tintin story Jackson has in mind.

Something else we know Jackson is keen on would be a return to his (often low-budget) horror movies. At Comic-Con he all but promised he was going to jump back into the genre. Is Cruise a match for one of those? At least as much as Michael J. Fox was, I guess. Or maybe Cruise isn’t looking to star, but perhaps set the film up at UA? Maybe.

The same is very possibly true of Jackson’s potential adaptation of the Temeraire books by Naomi Novik. A history twisting spin on the Napoleonic era that injects bloody great Dragons into the war, adapting these novels has been back-burner simmered by Jackson for some years now. Perhaps he’s now deciding to move forwards with the project? Perhaps at UA, then, or with Cruise in the cast? For me, this is the specific named project most likely to be true. Indeed, the only thing more likely is that they were meeting about something else entirely, something we don’t yet know a thing about.

Let’s not assume that Jackson was looking to Cruise for a collaborator when there’s every chance it could have been working in the opposite direction. Cruise could have been trying to bring in Jackson on a project he’s got cooking at UA - and if so, that project could be just about anything.

In my opinion if this happens then officially Jackson lost his mind for casting this guy. Just look at him in the picture above. :shurg:

UPDATE

AUG 28TH:

Quote:
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Tom Cruise flew all the way to New Zealand to meet with Peter Jackson. The reason for his trip is unknown, but it's safe to assume that it's business related. And we can only guess at what that business could be.

We know that Jackson is a producer on the upcoming "The Hobbit" prequels and that both he and director Guillermo Del Toro have already chosen their Bilbo Baggins. There is no contract in place because they wanted to wait until the script was ready and to give their star a chance to look at it. Ian McKellen recently revealed that the chosen actor will be getting the script this week. And it just so happens that Cruise is flying to New Zealand during this time. Coincidence?

The other reason why Cruise may be meeting with Jackson is to star in his "Tintin" sequel. Steven Spielberg is developing the first film and it will soon be time for Jackson to begin work on the second installment.

And finally, the biggest assumption of all. Could Cruise be the missing piece needed to push forward with a "Halo" movie?

We know that Jackson was previously involved in turning the popular game into a feature film and that Spielberg recently announced that he's interested in the franchise as well. The only problem is that Microsoft doesn't want to fund the movie and don't want to give up too many percentage points to a studio. So could a team of Jackson, Spielberg, and Cruise change Microsoft's mind?

A HALO MOVIE, COULD THIS BE POSSIBLE?!!!

Well try at least to ENJOY this sour news.

I actually wouldn't mind Cruise at all in one of these but I doubt Jackson would risk damaging these movies' box office by casting him.

I wouldn't either. Tom can be a good actor as long as he doesn't try to play himself. something about him acting makes it hard to believe that he is playing a fictional character. except in Tropic Thunder, and Mission Impossible.

Wouldn't it be easier to believe that Cruise is looking at attaching his name as producer on a movie with Jackson. I mean Cruise/Wagner productions is a bigtime production company.

As unlikely as it is, I think it would be just fine if Cruise were in any of those Jackson movies.

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest dorks on earth.
He is also an extremely talented actor.

He has yet to "ruin" any movie... he may have been in some bad films, but they would have been just as bad, or worse, without him. If I were to let my personal opinions of actors' offscreen character stop me from enjoying their films, I would like very few films indeed.

very true, while he is far from being my favorite actor, everytime I've seen one of his movies I was never bored. My favorite movie with him is The Last Samurai, in general the only 3 movies I can't forgive him for are the Mission Impossible movies. I am such a fan of the TV series and those movies have nothing in common with the show except the title, still he is far from being a bad actor.

well spoken. I think most of the negativity towards him are heavily due to the public baggage he picked in his personal lifestyle still wouldn't want him to be in The Hobbit for example.

Tom Cruise can act. I'm not against this casting news if Tom takes it as a serious PERFORMANCE PIECE!

Again, I have to express my feelings regarding the personal lives of celebrities... As audience members, our perceived notion of a performer must be distinsguishable via two SEPERATE categories. Tom Cruise is the perfect example of this. He has a screw loose when it comes to his personal affairs. But, THAT DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT THAT HE IS ALWAYS ENJOYABLE ON THE BIG SCREEN! People really need to start disassociating the two. Every artist is an artist because they have some eccentric quality about themselves that most people would perceive as "unusual."

QUIT READING TABLOIDS AND ENJOY THE PRESENTATION!

AN ACTOR'S PERSONAL LIFE DOES NOT BELONG ON TV OR IN THE PAPERS!

Very true, Petra, most of these people in that line of work are just certifiably insane, and it's probably the nexus of their talent.

While I do understand and respect the sentiment behind this, there is a few other things to consider. Tom Cruise made the choice to have is private life and believes known to the public. No body made him jump of the couch on Oprah, nobody made him start telling how it's wrong for people to take medication. He made the choice to have his personal life and believe be out in the public eye. He can't pick and choose what is that he want's them to think of him afterward, does not work like that.

Its been a while for Tom acting since Tropic Thunder was his last. But wouldn't want to see him in a hobbit movie.
