USA Shaw Brothers Classics Volume 5 (Shout! Factory)

Shout! Factory will be releasing a 5th volume of their Shaw Brothers Classics box sets in January! It will include 11 films ranging from 1967 to 1971.

Update 2: Shout now has an Official Replacement Form page for the tight slipcase:

https://shoutfactory.com/pages/shaw-...xsCsSGlFpzXgeQ

Quote:
Shaw Brothers Classics, Vol. 5 Replacement Slipcase Request Form
We have identified a tightness issue with the slipcase for the Shaw Brothers Classics, Vol. 5. If you need a replacement, please fill out the form below. We expect replacements to begin shipping in March of 2025. Please note that a small "R1” will appear on the bottom of the fixed slipcases to make them more easily distinguishable.

UpdateDue to a manufacturing error, some releases of this set, as well as the Golden Harvest Volume 2 release have cases that are slightly bigger than expected, which makes it extremely difficult for them to get out of their slipcases. Shout is offering a replacement for them. You'll need to contact them at info@shoutfactory.com

Full credit for this goes to playsignal76:

"Apparently, our manufacturer, without our knowledge, built some (but not all) units of these two sets using clear Blu-ray cases that are slightly larger than our standard spec. As a result, they fit in the rigid slipcase, but make it very difficult to get the cases out.

We'll replace the cases for both, which should break down per the below. Please confirm your current mailing address and we will dispatch the replacements to you as soon as possible.

Shaw Brother Classics, Vol. 5:
5 x 2-disc clear Blu-ray cases
1 x 1-disc clear Blu-ray case

Golden Harvest Vol. 2: Shining Stars Blu-ray:
4 x 2 disc clear Blu-ray cases"

Leap into action and adventure once again with another 11 classic martial arts films from the famous Shaw Brothers' library. Focusing on the Shaws' output from the late sixties and early seventies, this thrilling boxset includes many films appearing for the first time on Blu-ray. From swordplay to hand-to-hand combat, these films showcase the stylish and spectacular action and storytelling that made Shaw Brothers the gold standard in martial arts mayhem!

THE SILENT SWORDSMAN (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 99 min.)
During the Song Dynasty, a young martial arts student searches for his missing brother. When the student is recruited into a mysterious society, he finds himself taking on a nefarious warlord — and caught between two beautiful sisters in a battle for his affections.

RAPE OF THE SWORD (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 82 min.)
When a mystical, green-bladed weapon is stolen, two women are tasked with tracking it down, and soon cross paths with a master swordsman also in search of the fabled weapon. This exciting adventure is believed to be an unofficial, loose adaptation of the 1941 novel later brought to the screen in 2000's smash hit, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

THE FASTEST SWORD (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 89 min.)
A warrior known as "The Fastest Sword Of The South" is taught lessons in humility and honor when he loses a battle to an elderly monk and becomes the old man's servant for three years. Learning a more peaceful way of life, the swordsman's evolution is interrupted by echoes from his past actions.

TWIN BLADES OF DOOM (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 92 min.)
A man seeking revenge for the murder of his parents goes on a mission to investigate the gang responsible ... only to be brutally ambushed. Taken in by a family of street performers, he renews his valiant quest to not only avenge his parents but also to protect his new friends when the gang descends upon their village.

TWELVE DEADLY COINS (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 89 min.)
A treacherous ambush on a cargo team, the theft of a fortune's worth of gold, and the quest to retrieve it have roots in a twenty-year-old feud between two brothers, and the seemingly unstoppable martial arts technique known as "Twelve Deadly Coins."

VENGEANCE IS A GOLDEN BLADE (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 104 min.)
A man betrayed by his wife is attacked by the vicious Long Brothers, who steal his treasured Golden Dragon blade and leave him a broken man. Years later, the man's daughter sets off to avenge her father and reclaim her family's sword. This spectacular tale of vengeance was directed by Meng-Hua Ho (The Mighty Peking Man, The Flying Guillotine).

A TASTE OF COLD STEEL (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 84 min.)
A sequel to this boxset's Rape Of The Sword, A Taste Of Cold Steel finds three sisters and their swordsman cousin taking on all comers to defend and secure their family's most treasured heirloom ... a powerful and mystical blade.

THE IRON BUDDHA (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 88 min.)
When a notorious and odious villain kills his master and entire clan, the stalwart warrior known as The Iron Buddha sets out on an unquenchable quest for revenge. This engrossing film features fight choreography from the legendary Sammo Hung, who also appears in a small role.

THE JADE FACED ASSASSIN (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 110 min.)
When a woman's love is rejected by a master swordsman, it leads to an insidious and vengeful plot in which his two children are separated, raised by rival clans, and set up to kill each other in battle.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 101 min.)
The daughter of a slain, respected hero embarks on a desperate, heroic odyssey to take the highly coveted Golden Dragon Sword, a weapon of immense spiritual power, back to the Capitol to keep it safe from those who would abuse its might.

SIX ASSASSINS (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 83 min.)
A tyrannical feudal lord has ruled his domain with an iron fist and cold, hard steel. Determined to end his dark reign, a heroic swordsman enlists a band of warriors to join him in a last-ditch effort to take down the villain once and for all.

While not a fan of Mudge's commentaries due to his constant giggling, I am glad to see Brian Bankston back.

Man, I'm expecting another 3 volumes after this. I'm glad the Shaw love continues, plus another Shawscope from Arrow in 2025 probably, and more titles from Eureka and 88, it's getting crazy!

Reading the descriptions/titles, this set could have been subtitled: The Let's Get That Sword Collection

I know some have expressed not liking these being bunched into multi-disc sets but I personally prefer it...if anything price-wise. Though I know it's also 4k, that Corpse Mania (which I just learned about in the other Shaw thread) is over $50 here. Ack!

There's a bit less than 300 Shaw Brothers martial arts films. I'd imagine most if not all of these will eventually be released. What about the other 700 or so Shaw Brothers films? Can we expect all of them to be released as well?

I'm enormously excited for more Shaw Brothers releases.

No English dubs available on any of these?

I've been holding off all the Shout sets hoping for some UK equivalents but it seems I'm waiting for nothing.

US Shaw fans are lucky to have these sets and I'm glad they are continuing (even if I am jealous).

Give the age and relative obscurity of these specific titles compared to more popular (and later entry) Shaw martial arts titles, it’s entirely likely there were never English dubs created for them when they were originally released.

Quite possible, but I'm pretty sure many movies in the 2nd boxset had Eglish dubs available that weren't included for whatever reason.

I'm hoping this release omits English dubs due to them not existing, rather than just not being included.

And here I'm still working through the first four sets!

Funny though, those were all chronological, yet this seems to cover similar years to the vol 1 set. Not that I'm complaining, but this might be the first one I wait on. I just am not that into the late 60s, early 70s Shaw. Late 70s, early 80s is my sweet spot.

You are correct, sir! I just found out that out of the 900 SB films, only 269 were officially Martial Arts films. Still, that is a LOT of martial arts films! And if the other genres are ever released...hooh boy..

I'm not familiar with almost any of these, so this will be (hopefully ) fun.

I'm also happy Bankston is back--one of my new favorite commentators.

Someone smarter than me should attempt a Shaw thread if it doesn’t become too complicated in its presentation. But with a studio like this, a spreadsheet might make more sense, haha.
