At first glance I thought this was a documentary about the movies the ABC network used to show weekdays at 4:30 during the 80's. Not sure why there would be a documentary about this but that's what I thought.

It's so odd because their past two SDR 4Ks, Boy Kills World and Kill, have had Dolby Vision rightfully stripped from their art assets (aside from the small HDR blurb that's just part of Lionsgate's UHD template). My best guess for the former two not having HDR is they probably just weren't graded in HDR during production, considering they were low-budget movies acquired by Lionsgate AFTER they were finished. I'm not exactly sure about 4:30 though.

I watched this last night, reminded me a lot of Matinee but not quite as good. I think the main difference is that Joe Dante put a lot of love and care into MANT and it was directly tied into the story. In 4:30 the fake movies and trailers just feel like filler and don’t add to the experience. I thought the young cast did a good job, and Ken Jeong was more reserved than usual and was good in this role.
The HDR thing is a shame, lots of daytime scenes that would have looked great with an HDR pass. |

I watched this yesterday, too, and while I have no complaints about the presentation I did come out of this one wondering why in the world I still feel compelled to get every Kevin Smith movie. Then again, the commentary will probably be more enjoyable than the movie. It just reminded me that I'm more of a fan of Kevin Smith than Kevin Smith's movies. Smith is so great at storytelling when it's just him and a microphone, but give him a bigger canvass and it can get messy. I suppose "messy" is sometimes part of the charm, but not this time for me.
It really is too bad, because these kids were really good. It started off pretty strong, but once the kids get to the movie theater the movie comes to a complete stop. Now we're in sketch territory as we're treated to full joke trailers that I didn't find amusing at all. For a movie with such a short run time, devoting this much real estate to fake trailers and scenes from a super cheap movie we're supposed to believe would get a theatrical release pretty much says it all as far as substance is concerned. The big standout for me was Bear McCreary's (or I guess his "Sparks and Shadows" team) score. I just wish Smith could've lived up to it. |

I posted the following on Twitter:
Hey, @ThatKevinSmith, a lot of us are noticing that the (super cool) packaging for the 4K UHD Steelbook of #The430Movie says it’s presented in Dolby Vision HDR, but the actual disc plays in SDR only. Was it supposed to have an HDR grade or was it your wish to be SDR?. Kevin Smith’s official account liked the post but didn’t reply, so… ![]() |

I streamed and assumed this was going to be a weed movie & a comedy. But it's actually a nice coming of age movie. Didn't know it was Kevin Smith until the end. I might get this now.

Okay, the answer is that it's a packaging text error that wasn't run by the production people for approval before it got printed. @ThatKevinSmith (who's great people BTW--Hey, Kev!) delivered an SDR master and that's what it was mean to be. |

I watched this today after work with chicken tenders. I didn't give it my full attention at first when I streamed it a few months ago because I didn't think it would be good. I didn't even know it was a Kevin Smith movie until after. Now I think it's his best movie, and also the only one I own. I was expecting it to be a weed movie with 4:30 being a play on 420. The title actually references the show time of a movie within the movie. The storyline revolves around Smith's younger counterpart going on a date with a girl he's been pining for. But she's only at the beginning and end. The rest centers around the theater hopping shenanigans he and some friends get up to while waiting for the 4:30 movie (which actually ends up being at 7). It's actually a pretty cool coming of age story. The credits music, which I now realize actually plays throughout the movie, is really good and I bought it and have listened to it dozens of times in the past couple months. I love that song and I think it fits the movie perfectly, and it probably swayed my decision to buy.
The picture is unfortunately just SDR as has been mentioned. Nonetheless it looks really good and detailed, one of the best SDR only UHDs I've seen. I used headphones for the sound, but other than the recurring song they the sound doesn't add too much. The blu-ray is annoying region locked, but this is not as annoying as you might think since all of the specials are on the UHD. And actually, it's just a 25 minutes making of feature, but a very good one. And Smith gives a lot of detail about his thought process in making the movie and how it related to his life. Unfortunately no interviews with the kids other than the girl. I would have liked to hear from the guy who played Smith's counterpart. Anyway, I'd definitely recommend streaming a rental but maybe not everyone's cup of tea so not a blind buy. If you like it then it's a really good UHD even with unfortunately no HDR. |
