USA Ju Dou (1990) (Film Movement Classics)

It looks like Film Movement has acquired the critically-acclaimed Chinese film Ju Dou (1990), co-directed by Zhang Yimou and Yang Fengliang, and starring Gong Li. It was the first Chinese film nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. A Blu-ray should be released through OCN distribution sometime next year.

Quote:
Ju Dou (Gong Li), the young bride of Yang Jin-shan (Wei Li), who is the tyrannical owner of a silk-dyeing business, is forced to endure her husband's violent tendencies and condescending nature. Although Ju Dou finds temporary solace in the arms of her husband's nephew, Tian-qing (Baotian Li), problems arise when Ju Dou gets pregnant. The couple then desperately tries to hide their passionate romance while convincing the merciless Jin-shan that the child is his.

Excellent news. A really great film and was hoping this would eventually get a release after Shanghai Triad was released.

What a run Zhang Yimou had from Red Sorghum to Shanghai Triad. The finest director of tragedies of his time - even more admirable considering how critical of societal issues those films were.

Ju Dou is one of the saddest films I've ever seen.

I've been slowly working my way through Zhang Yimou's early films via the excellent Imprint Australian releases. Seen up through Shanghai Triad so far, and Ju Dou is definitely my favourite.

Nice that these films are finally starting to trickle out onto the US market, and if there's some dramatic improvement reported, I guess this is the one I would consider double-dipping on.

Film Movement have added a new poster fror Zhang Yimou's Ju Dou (1990). It'll be shown theatrically starting on October.

This was the first or second non-English film I ever saw, back in college. Loved it and I'll look forward to revisiting it.

Wish it were a wider release. I've only seen Hero thru Curse of the Golden Flower in theaters. Raise the Red Lantern changed me forever as a film enthusiast.
