Default I have 4000.00 to spend. Put together a good surround sound package for me!

I'm talking solely the cost of components here. Not home theater construction! What would be the best 7.1 package I could put together for 4 grand?

That is going to depend widely on your tastes of how speakers and the reciever sound to YOU.

I would probably go with either a Marantz 6003 or Denon 2810 receiver, but thats me, unless you want an Amp. I would go get something along the lines of an emotiva or Rotel AMP and then a receiver for pre-outs like a Marantz 5003, Pioneer VSX-23 or VSX-21, Yamaha 865, Onkyo 707 or Sony ES 2400. Me I would probably get the Marantz 5003 and a 3 channel amp to start that way, power the front three speakers with the cleanest power I could and let my receivers amp power the rears.

You will need to spend some time auditioning speakers.

There are so many speakers out there it is hard to tell someone these are the best go get them. I love Energys, B&Ws, PSBs as my speakers of choice. So yes you should audition these ones. Others will say check into Klipsch, Paradigm, KEF, Definitive Tech, Polk, & Mirage.

I do like Paradigm, KEF, Mirage and Def Tech, but they are not the ones I would buy. I would recommend listening to them because you may want to buy them. All 4 have huge followings.

Now there are still many others I haven't heard before so I cant tell you I would like them or not, so you would have to go hear them, some would be Totem, Dynaudio, & Monitor Audio. Reviews on all of these speakers are that they are top notch. And every owner on here with them love these speakers.

There are also internet direct companies like Elemental Designs & Swan, and many others you may want to look into.

Look here for a complete list of Speaker companies post #1 and #22

Plus you need a sub, if you have a really big room perhaps 2 subs.... Elemental Designs, Hsu, SVS, AV123, Martin Logan, Def Tech Supercubes are all Subs I would suggest.

Lastly, do you have a Blu-ray player? An HDTV? Are you also wanting to add in a CD/SACD player?

What all are you buying because if we have to add in TVs and other items that will decrease your budget for speakers and a reciever.

Steve

I would spend it as follows:

AV Receiver: $750
7.1 Speaker: $2,500
Blu-ray Player: $500
Cables, etc: $250

The only recommendation I'll make is for the new Oppo BDP83 Blu-ray/SACD/CD player. It's a terrific all-in-one unit.

GREAT POST Callas!

Do you plan on doing any music listening, or strictly for movies? How big is your room/ dimensions?

do you have ANY equipment now that you will be hanging on to?

Are you thinking about a projector?

Ditto!
I have had 2 previous players, (Samsuck 1200 and Sony 500 ) and the OPPO is head and shoulders over both.

Go with the OPPO for a Blu Ray player I love mine it loads so fast PCM's and Bitstreams the audio comes with a free HDMI cable, and a Spears and Munsil calibration disk.

I would go with B&W, Paradigm, or PSB for speakers

Do you need a Blu-ray player too? or just Pre-pro/Amp/AVR Speakers?

Well here would be my reciever (open box but still has MFG warranty) of choice and then add an amp like this Emotiva XPA-3 Now for about $1000 you have your reciever and power amp complete. Of course you can try to locate a Pioneer VSX-03 or VSX-23 in the same price range(hopefully) or a Denon 2809 or Yamaha 863/865 or a Sony ES2400.

Moving on to speakers. You have a $3k budget now.

Subwoofer Look at these Elemental Designs between the A2-300 and the A3-300, SVS PB-12 NSD or HSU Research. All very capable subs. All around $500

That leaves about $2500 for speakers.

B&W 600 series
PSB Image series
Energy RC series
Monitor Audio Silver RS series
Klipsch RF series/WF series maybe
KEF iQ series (if I would go with a bright sounding speakers, these over Klipsch, For me anyways)
Paradigm Monitor series
Definitive Tech Supertowers

Those would probably be the places I would start and I would listen to every speaker the dealer near you has in there because they will have multiple speaker brands and you can compare them all.

Don't forget to take a music and a movie you are very familiar with along with you too. That will help you to demo the speakers and give you a better idea of what you like and how it sounds to you.

Good luck and have fun.

Quick search found this...... I may grab it up.... but there are many like it. I'll have to see about shipping etc.

http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls....-5-ch-100-watt

Perhaps look for a Rotel AVR (costly but can be had at comparative prices to getting a Marantz/Denon/Onkyo running an Emotiva.... which has been suggested.....)

Depends what you want to do......

So if $4k is Audio only, I'd find the best deal I can on the used market (from something you can audition or have auditioned of course) and build around it.

This NAD and Klipsch package is a great deal. You would need to add a second set of surrounds so figure another $500.

For 4K I'd look into some Paradigm Monitor Series for speakers and look at something from Denon or Pioneer for a receiver. I'd go fairly high end on the receiver.
