I just demoed a Martin Logan Dynamo and an Abyss in Best Buy last night and man do they sound good. Both of them are very fast subs. I was especially impressed with the Abyss, but not so much the $1100 price that they want for it.

I was actually there to check out the Def Tech Supercube III which sounded good, but the output was lackluster. Yeah, it goes as low as the specs say but this wasn't a particularly loud sub, but then I heard the Dynamo and I was like...whoa!! That little guy surprised me especially since its only rated down to 25hz officially by Martin Logan. Watching some scenes from Iron Man I'd say the response is much lower, but not as loud as a much larger sub could do. That little guy was impressive nonetheless.

I'm eying an upgrade soon, but I haven't decided which way to go yet. I want more power and depth, but I think I want something small. My choices seem to be limited in this department, but I've been checking out an Earthquake and a Sunfire since I wasn't too impressed with the Supercube. The bad thing is that I missed the Dynamo markdown that Amazon had the other night for $350 shipped.
Oh gotcha, we're on the same page. Ya know for $900, you could get dual AV123 MFW-15's.

You may have already seen it, but take a look at this post in the "best sub" thread.

I missed the ML Dynamo sale too. Lol not that I had a need for that sub but was a great deal!

Haha glad to help . Man if I had $900 and a place to put those things, I'd jump on that immediately!

Yeah, I've seen the sub rankings and the MFW-15 is pretty serious. For the money there's nothing touching them. The price to performance ratio is amazing, but I'm still not too keen on the company. I've kept an eye on the threads over on avsforum, and they still haven't quite ironed everything out yet.

The good thing is that Mark from av123 has been giving quite a bit of feedback in the thread over there, and I think that they are on their way to repairing their reputation. Aside from that, I'm pretty sure that I want something small and that bad boy is huge! My neighbors will probably hate me for that one anyway, and I know I've already disturbed their sleep on occasion with my current sub. The sub I'm currently running is pretty good...it's a Harman...its nearly identical to the Infinity that comes in their satellite speaker packages. Its much better than what I expected in a speaker package.

Basically I'm looking for a second sub to run with it. I could be cheap and get a comparable sub and still get good performance, but I might as well get something that's going to be much better and digs deeper. That's why I demoed the Supercube III since it goes much lower, but from an output standpoint my current sub walks all over it. It was tight and accurate but its just way to weak on the output.

The Dynamo on the other hand has better output and trounced the Supercube pretty easily. It sounded cleaner and I was amazed at how fast it is. My original plan was to go with an SVS cylinder, but I've decided now that I want something small...I don't have a particularly large living room and I've got enough going on in there right now. LOL.

Right now I'm leaning towards a Sunfire sub, but I think that I might jump on the Dynamo if it goes back on sale...maybe even buy two. Amazon had it on sale about a month ago for $325 shipped and I didn't even consider it because the specs led me to believe that it didn't go deep enough. Of course after I heard it my view on that little guy completely changed. On top of that the Amazon $350 sale ended two days before I heard it.

Lol, bummer on the timing for that Amazon sale. If you're looking for something small, the SVS cylinders that you mentioned are small. They have a small footprint in comparison to the traditional boxy types. That might work for you, and from what I've heard the PC12-NSD is a pretty gnarly sub for about $600 shipped. I'm sure Forsberg or some of the others can chime in on that note

The next time I need to remodel a room, I'll take one of these home and simply turn it on. I should have the room cleared out nicely to re-build from the ground up. My God, if subs get any bigger, they'll have to name them like they do with hurricaines.

Yeah, I've been looking at the SVS options. Like I said, the cylinder was pretty high on my list for awhile, but now I want something that won't be such a conversation piece every time I have company. I get enough questions about the sub I have now. I'd rather my Kuro be the center of attention. LOL.

Ideally, I want a JL Fathom, but I can't afford one of those. After doing a lot of research I've been considering THIS or THIS Sunfire sub. The reviews that I've read have been very positive and around the forums they get a lot of praise. The review of the 12" on Audioholics stated that the performance was better than 2/3 of the Fathom which is pretty good considering these are much cheaper.

I'm also looking at the Earthquake subs which can be found a little cheaper and they are similar to the Sunfire subs. I still haven't ruled out SVS and I'm also considering Outlaw and HSU, but I do like that the 10" Sunfire is roughly a 12" cube with terrific performance. The 12" sub is about a 14" cube. Getting a Dynamo for a great price would still be a good way to go too, although I'm tempted to spend more on the Abyss if I can get a good deal.

While I think the MFW-15 is a great sub, I personally wouldn't buy anything from AV123 at this point. Those folks that have the sub and are happy I consider lucky, due to all the shenanighans surrounding that company at this point. If you roll the dice and get a solid product, then you're golden. If there's issues with it or you don't even GET the product, then you're boned. Do a lot of reading before considering that company.

I agree completely. I was looking for subs back in June and really wanted to purchase one of these, but the high roll stakes that come with them was too much for me. So I went with an SVS sub. They are trying to get back on their feet, but it is still a sort of a luck of the draw if you get a good sub or not.

yea guys , i have been following them a lil bit, and see there now using( or will be in there next shipments ) the new amps.. Yea feedback in the past couple months has been terrible, but it seems like they fixed the only issue anyone has had with them... Sad to say , it shows the quality of cheap parts they use to make an extra buck, but that being said, coupled along with an extra 1 year warranty ( for a total of 4 now ) it seems like it might be a better deal for the consumer..

Just to clarify, i wasnt looking at the dual 15 for $900 in comparison to my $400 dayton build, it was the black single MFW 15 for $499

Yeah, they are already shipping them with the new amps. From what I understand the first batch of this sub was fine, but the supplier of the amps decided to start using different parts without notifying av123 and that's when the problems began. Now, its my understanding that they have a different supplier and a totally different amp that's even more powerful than the original.

The single MFW-15 is very tempting at $499, but its just too big for me. Like I said, I think that they are working hard to change the perception of the company, but I would still wait a little while to make sure the amp problems are completely over. I've heard nothing but good things about their speakers, not to mention that they look awesome, and its sad that one problematic product has put such a blemish on their reputation.

Ahh, I guess I thought they had ironed everything out. I remember someone talking about it in another thread and saying that they've been shipping good products since late May 09. Well, looks like I'm in a good spot since I'm not sub shopping right now, and won't be for a while . But I'll keep an eye on them and keep them in mind for the future

Good news for DIY subwoofer builders. Parts Express has a big sale starting on September 1. Their 10", 12", and 15" Titanic MKIII drivers will go on sale.
10" Sale Price: $138
12" Sale Price: $148
15" Sale Price: $178

How did this thread about Revel's big subwoofer turn into DIY and AV123 subwoofer thread?
