I've got a Sony VPL-HW40ES 1080P 3D projector.
I find myself in this odd situation where, because new remasters are now sometimes only available in 4K, I need a 4K player that will only be used to output to my 1080P projector. Anyone here have any experience and recommendations for a player that's good at down-sampling to SD? I've read many players don't do well at this and the video often looks "washed out." I appreciate any insights. Thanks. |

I previously used a Panasonic 820 to downsample 4k Blu-rays to a 1080p OLED. Even more critical is the HDR to SDR conversion since your projector won’t be able to reproduce the color gamut or brightness of HDR. The tone mapping on the 820 is above average, and might be the best in the existing market doing this particular task (will be curious to hear other’s opinions).
I also have a 420 I’ll be setting up in a couple of weeks to do this. If I’m not mistaken, outside of the lack of DV support it should have identical performance to the 820 on the tone mapping front. Last edited by deatheats; 12-19-2024 at 04:11 AM. |
