New Line Cinema The Mummy (2026)

Quote:
The Mummy is being unwrapped from the dead once again.

Lee Cronin is writing and directing a new take on the horror trope revolving around the ancient mummified undead for New Line, The Hollywood Reporter can reveal.

The project was previously only known as a Cronin mystery movie that had been announced earlier this year and is now set for an April 17, 2026 release. Plot details are being kept in the sarcophagus but Cronin is hoping to breathe modern life into ageless evil.

“This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before,” he said in a statement to THR. “I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.”

Wish it was proper Universal and not Blumhouse.

Atomic Monster being involved is interesting.

So is this a Universal Monsters movie? Weird that New Line is handling distribution if so though Uni may just want to put distance between them and Mummies after 2017.

I feel like everybody's expectations are so low at this point, it's bound to be a surprise hit. Right?

Why do we get Wolfman and Mummy movies fairly frequently but this guy gets ignored?

I reckon this prequel project is on the back-burner or scrapped.

[Show spoiler]
Universal doesn’t know what to do with him while GDT comes along and wins Oscars with him. They actually rejected GDT’s pitch.

We getting one for James Wan later on down the line: https://variety.com/2024/film/news/c...an-1236104140/

Also, it helps that Werewolves and Mummies are fairly public domain stuff while the Gill Man is an original creation from Universal.

I want some serious movie tackling the egyptian mythology but instead they keep making these shitty horror movies.

With the 1999 The Mummy, they had a potential Rick Connel franchise that could have rivalled Indiana Jones. But they focused on the wrong thing and stuck Brendan Fraser with the same antagonist again and again with awful directors.

Rick Connel could have had several Indiana style adventure movies exploring different Egyptian mythologies or go even further afield.

Imo, the best Mummy movie is Hammer's 1959 Mummy movie. If this is smaller scale and more similar to that, i'll be all over this. Never really liked how they tried to turn the Mummy franchise into the next Indiana Jones. Keep it simple, keep it horror.

Edit: just saw it's from the director of Evil dead rises, what a great idea! Hopefully they let him go wild.
So far, Blumhouse are the only ones that have been able to make good modern Universal monster movies, so hopefully this and The wolf man can also deliver!

Haven't they only released one (very well received) Universal monster movies? The Invisible man? Not such a bad track record so far. Or am I missing something here?

article says it's a new take on the mummy mythology not affiliated with Universal Monsters, plus Warners are distributing so definitely not from Uni

How do you make a mummy movie unique? A she mummy? Not controlled by an Egyptian fanatic? Not pining for some dead high priestess lookalike? Can actually run? I'm sure they'll think of something ridiculous. All the same I'm all in

Probably cant be any lower as this character or IP has been torn & tattered over the years.
