Probably my favorite film of the year. This or Dune 2.

Also now that this film is a hit, I really hope someone releases Shadow of the Vampire on Blu-ray finally.

Interesting that there's a longer cut. Would have thought Eggers would be happy wit this cut. Thought he got final cut for this film.

Talk about an overdue release. Trying to talk my wife into seeing Nosferatu tonight. It's a work in progress

It was reported that he didn't get final cut on The Northman, so he might not have gotten it here either.

Heard that before. Kind of figured that a reason he lost final cut on The Northman was because he was getting Nosferatu set up from Focus and he factored that deal in with it.

I also didn't think the movie needed anything more - it was excellent as it was. But as long as we're still getting the choice between the 2, then I guess there's no harm in them releasing his preferred cut.

I'm actually surprised to hear that he might not have had final cut as the movie felt nearly perfect. We'll see what's different once it releases, but it felt pretty complete.

I thought the theatrical cut was already great. Not sure it needs anything else, but I'll check out the extended regardless.

The only thing I had any issue with was Aaron Taylor-Johnson. His performance felt just a bit stiff. At least compared to Dafoe, Hoult, and Depp, who were all doing amazing work. Anybody else feel that way? Or maybe it's just me having a hard time seeing him in that time period.

I had the same issue as you, however I also didn't care for Depp in her role sadly, I felt no emotional depth with her at all. I enjoyed Hoult just fine and Dafoe of course can do anything in my mind - even when he plays it a bit campy, he's just the best!

If I'm not a fan of Robert Eggars, is this the film that would change my mind on him? Or is it a case of - if I haven't liked any of his movies so far, I probably won't like this one either?

If you didn't like his previous movies, I doubt you'd like this.

I watched both earlier versions leading up to this one, and felt like that really contributed to my enjoyment and appreciation of this latest version. I'm curious how it plays on its own. But I guess I'll have to give it some time before I can answer that question for myself.

I admired Eggers' previous movies like VVitch and Lighthouse without really enjoying them, but this one I can say, I enjoyed. It's one flaw is that it's a bit too talky, but I thought he embraced the pulp melodrama element very wholeheartedly. I also thought that Lily-Rose Depp and Hoult did a solid job of selling the bond between Hutter and Ellen, which is the lynchpin of their resistance against the powerful Orlok. YMMV.

Thanks. That's the same way I feel. I recognize he is a quality director, but I just haven't enjoyed his films so far. I probably will check this out when it's released to disc. Also, how does it compare to Herzog's Nosferatu?
