Thanks. Wonderful news. 14 January 2025 release.

This should make up for that atrocious, dishonest blu-ray
Kino released a few years ago. It's a dark shadowy film
and needs 4K UHD to be seen well.

I’ve been rewatching the Russian series with Vasily Livanov as Holmes. I rank it very highly. Livanov and Solomon make a warm and charming Holmes and Watson, and the musical score is delightful. It’s Such an accurate adaptation that I wonder if it inspired the Granada productions at all.

Any chance we could get a proper release of that? I’m not sure what quality is possible with them but I see Russia has seen some kind of blu release of them……I know the current subtitles available on YouTube and on the old dvd release are pretty awful and could use some love and care.

Murder by Decree is owned by Studio Canal and it will be doing the UHD master so I hope they will not give it to L'Immagine Ritrovata or subsidiaries for color grading.

Kino Lorber's new MURDER BY DECREE (1979) 4K UHD is up
for pre-order on amazon. 21 January 2025 release.

Let's hope the new transfer and grading make up for that
atrocious, dishonest blu-ray Kino released a few years ago.
They should have issued replacement discs or refunds for
that. It's a dark shadowy film and needs 4K UHD to be
seen well.

Thanks for the great thread Richard. Just picked up all the individual Seasons for the Granada Jeremy Brett series. The most cost effective way to buy this at the moment and also prefer the packaging in standard cases.. It's actually the second time I've bought the series. Several years ago I had to let go of my first set. Can't wait for another watch....the games afoot!

Post is kinda lying in about them being "bootlegs".

Spanish copyright laws work uniquely in that if an official studio doesn't release a film/TV show in a certain amount of time, it's free reign for anyone else to release it on physical media. Which is how they got say a True Lies release earlier that wasn't a DNRd disaster.

So not exactly "official" but not really a bootleg since it's legal under Spanish Copyright law.

A very grey market to say the least.

Have you tried Peter Cushing's series?

He was well-ahead of Brett in his interpretation, I think.

The program is not as well-produced but it's still good.

I've always loved The Hound of the Baskervilles from Hammer with Peter. Big fan of his. I was looking at the Severin release of the series and it says they're are only 6 episodes that have survived. Is this true, or is the entire series streaming somewhere? For the record though, my favorite Holmes would be Jeremy Brett.

The Severin Blu has all of the surviving episodes of the Cushing Holmes.

Yes, they're available separately or in Severin's Cushing Curiosities box set.

Apologies, yes that was a pretty ridiculous question. When Richard asked if I had seen the series, I thought there may actually be more than 6 episodes available somewhere. If that were the case, then Severin would not have stated that there were only 6 surviving episodes on the film case. Elementary ...

Cheers...

Richard, while looking through Sherlock Holmes titles available on Blu-ray, I discovered a 2010 film which was not represented on your list. However, after looking at it's premise, perhaps your omission was intentional? It is a Region B German Release from 2013 called "Sherlock Holmes". Also known as "Sherlock Holmes and the Dinosaur". It's available to import from Amazon.de.

This is that non-budget amateur film "produced" by The Asylum
to cash in on the big-budget Richie films with Downey Jr. The
Asylum used to make a lot of cash-grab amateur films like this
with cheap HiDef cameras. The company was managed by SAG's
former rep to low-budget indy filmmakers. I had some interaction
with him but I forget his name. Anyhow, the German blu-ray is
not on my master list because it's not in the blu-ray dot com
database. When it's in the database I'll have a link to put on the
master list.

However the DVD is in the database and I put that in post #2.

Baker Street the Musical was very popular on Broadway
1965 - 1969 but never had a film adaptation. From
what I've seen Fritz Weaver made a fine Holmes. I've
had the LP for over 50 years. My copy is an MGM I
didn't know there was a Decca edition.

Can you deduce, from the lyrics and dialogue, which of
the short stories inspired it? You know the methods.
Apply them.

Overture - YouTube
Just yesterday, I began my re-watch of the Jeremy Brett series. The first episode from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was "A Scandal in Bohemia" with the beautiful Gayle Hunnicutt. The Baker Street song, "It's So Simple", seems to borrow bits and pieces from this. Oh, and yes, I can definitely see Fritz Weaver making a most excellent Holmes.
