My old trusty Oppo BDP-80 seems to have stopped playing Region B discs, I had installed a JVB Digital chip ( http://www.jvbdigital.nl/jvb.asp?cur...tle&title=1073 ) when I first got the player 10 years ago.
Turning on the player is no longer possible with the 1/2/3 buttons (not sure if the color buttons ever did anything, I read somewhere that pressing and holding the Blue button can work for some mods but it doesn't do anything now). Strangely, the player seems to be locked at Region 2 for DVDs (Region 1 discs give an out of region error), even though it was Region 1 before the mod was installed. When the mod worked, any region DVDs worked without needing to do anything on the remote (unlike BDs which needed the region to be switched each time). Tried disconnecting the chip and then re-connecting, unplugging it for several hours, but still Region A only. Didn't see any signs of damage on the mod chip (haven't had any power surges or anything), and it's at least still passing whatever signals go through the player buttons>mod>player PCB. TL;DR: Only have a few Region B discs so this is no big deal, but curious if anyone else has had this problem. |

Sorry I didn't reply sooner (thought I had).
Looks like removing the modchip did indeed reset it back to Region 1. Probably won't need to play any Region B BDs anytime soon, but if I do I guess I can always softmod a PS3 (pretty sure I have one with an old firmware in my closet). |

Or just for fun now that the player appears back to Region A/1 -- reinstall the chip and see if it works again
I know a couple people did this with the later Int/Ext Module when it appeared to lock up/stop changing regions As far as I'm aware as an alternative, the avs-digital/graded exchange ebay Internal and External model works for the 80 as well. The last time I looked, that module was starting to become harder to find and wasn't $50 anymore. The cheapest I can find now is $100 |

I have the OPPO BDP-93 with a region-free modification. It worked fine for years but recently became finicky, then finally stayed locked on Region 1 and all times. I was ready to give up and get a new player, when I thought I'd try resetting to factory defaults.
SETUP>DEVICE SETUP>RESET FACTORY DEFAULTS That was all it took. Region free mod. works fine now. But I would avoid any firmware updates, just to be safe. |

resetting to factory shouldn't reset the firmware, just all the other functions, and the Persistent Memory which I'm guessing was the culprit -- unless you tried a memor y wipe and reboot already. OPPO hardware mods have always been firmware free so I would feel OK continuing them.

My partner came across this problem of not being able to change regions, while she was buying a BDP-93 for me today, and I couldn't be there. She said the player wouldn't change back to Region B after originally being in Region B, then changing to Region A, then changing back to B.
The disk had been played before. This is what happened: 1. Entered code for changing to Region B, and turned machine off. 2. Inserted disk. 3. Up came a message "Continue playing?" The message was ignored, and I assume that meant "Yes, continue playing". 4. "Disk won't play" message pops up. 5. Repeated procedure three times with the same result. On the fourth attempt she selected "No" after the "Continue playing?" message appeared, and it worked. Conclusion? When changing regions, allowing a Blu-ray to continue playing may prevent the mod from working on a previously played disk. |

There is a much better and faster method to change regions and not only that... write to me PM if you want to know more.
