Finally got around to opening my set and there are scratches on one of the discs, The Bride from Hades. Got a replacement...same issue, although that one had scratches on multiple discs.

I did reach out to Radiance customer service, which has been a great customer service in my opinion. They are aware of the issue, and the manufacturer have assured Radiance they are taking steps to make sure this doesn't happen, so hopefully this won't be a continued thing. I don't suppose any of the labels are happy with these, as I gather many labels use the same plant.

not that my recommendation will be matched by your own experience of the films in this set, but it is the closest i've seen in a long time to what i believe japan does best, and did so frequently during the middle of the twentieth century. they're very solid, crafted genre films with a good balance between odd and commercial elements. 'the ghost of yotsuya' is the most layered, 'the bride from hades' the most lighthearted, 'the snow woman' the most impactful. really liked them all.

My fourth Daiei Gothic set arrived.
All three discs are scratched, two with large greasy fingerprints on them.
I was going to buy a few copies, mix and match the mint discs... but at this rate there's really no point.
My Japan Organised Crime Boss is slightly scratched too.

I wonder how many sets are lost to you guys burning through several of them to find the perfect one.

Why not wait for the standard set where it's more likely that the issue would have been rectified?

While I agree that there's no point even attempting to buy this title at the moment, if sets are being lost to returns, it's only because of the poor condition of the discs. The only way this issue will ever be addressed is if there are significant enough returns.

Standard Set? Has one been announced?
Wouldn't this simply be a case of the films being released individually once the LE set has sold out?

I'm immensely hesitant to pick this set up under the circumstances, but on a positive note I had Haxan arrive without a single mark on either disc, so not everything from Radiance seems to be effected.

Yeah, good point. I just had the Bounty Hunter set in mind, but separate releases make more sense.

I disagree.

They are awesome.

They are fun to look at and have nice colours and interesting things to read on them.

Also when you take them down from the shelf and show them off to people with the case and reversible art and booklet, people go "Wooahhhh".

88 Films have started to copy the trend as they understood it was an excellent thing that needed to be copied, so soon most of my discs will have J-cards on them.

I hope the trend continues forever. I just wish I could live for several decades more so I could continue to buy these releases, arrange them carefully in order on the shelf, and stare at them for hours each week in wonder.

This sucks, so far I've been lucky but it doesn't make me want to rush out and grab that box.

My Daiei Gothic discs are all mint, as are the other Radiance discs I’ve watched recently (World Noir 2, Slap the Monster, I Vampiri, Panic in Year Zero, Dogra Magra, A Quiet Place in the Country).
