Default Black Book 5/5 PQ 5/5 AQ

Wow. I am a World War 2 movie fanatic. A fantastic Sony release.
The site's review scores the Aq 5/5 and the PQ 5/5...most definitely agree.

Black Book is an excellent movie, IMO. Carice van Houten was amazing, and the rest of the cast was quite good. Can't wait to pick this one up on BD.

Want to see Black Book so bad. From what I hear it may wind up being a Blu Ray purchase for me.

I received my copy of the Tartan release today. As a newish UK-based Blu-ray owner, I didn't know whether the superior US release would work on my PS3 until it was too late to cancel my order. When I placed my pre-order I also didn't realise this release was a 2-disc BLu-ray/DVD combo, but that's what it is. Consequently, it has a sticker on the front describing it as 'future proof', which doesn't make Tartan come across as overly optimistic that Blu-ray has a future...

I see it more as them allaying The fears of the buying public. Letting them know that no matter what, they'll be able to watch their movie.

Watched it tonight. My goodness. An excellent movie it is indeed.

Carice van Houten...what can I say, the emotion she shows by her subtle facial expressions were pure gold. (No pun intended for those giggling onlookers! ) And she can sing too.

enjoy

I think what they mean is you can buy it to watch the DVD now, but it's a future-proof purchase in that you won't have to repurchase the title when you upgrade to a Blu-ray player in the future.

I think that it's more directed at DVD becoming the "past" in the future.

Watched the movie a couple of days ago, and it was awesome. My only complain is that it could have been 20 minutes shorter. Carice van Houten is HOT , and the other girl has a nice body too.

SONY AND DISNEY Releases are great so far on BD ,This Sony release got 5.0 for PQ AND SQ ...Again and always Highdefdigest failed to impressed me with their rating results.

Video:

"Here again, Sony shows what they can do with more disc space and higher bandwidth. The high bitrate AVC encoding looks about as flawless, in terms of compression, as I have seen. No excessive noise in the shadows, no artificial looking grain, no banding, it’s just crisp, clear HD goodness from beginning to end that really shows the photography in a very revealing light.

Image depth is terrific even without a loss of background detail. Black levels at night are deep, extremely well delineated. And during the day, the brightness of the sun reveals only some consequential aberration of the photography. Colors look very natural in saturation and balance, only affected by the availing light, unfettered and without obvious digital augmentation."

Audio:

" the presentation is enormously strong, just as we’ve grown accustomed to from PCM. This 16bit encoding sounds highly transparent, natural, immensely spacious, and packs a punch when it needs to"

Thanks again CHAD for the great review you did on Hometheaterspot .

I just watched the UK release of this, it sounds like it's the same encode, it's AVC and was around 30Mbps whenever I looked at the PS3's bitrate meter.

Absolutely superb video quality, this is what High Def is all about, and is a perfect illustration of why Blu-ray must defeat HD-DVD so we can have all movies available with such high quality encodes.

I concur. Being dutch myself, a huge Paul Verhoeven fan and ofcourse a blu ray supporter; I really couldn't justify NOT getting this title. Even though I don't care for WW2 movies that much.

Picture Quality and sound were awesome. I love the scene in which they blew the farm house to bits. (this caused quite a fuzz in the netherlands!)

Too bad the relationship between Verhoeven and Rutger Hauer deteriated over the years. It would have been great to see him in the cast as well. (Hauer did an awesome job in Soldaat van Oranje back in the 70s)

How true. It's funny how people turn our love of LPCM into an attack against TrueHD. It's all very simple: TrueHD is fine, but it better be just as good as LPCM, because we're now spoiled rotten by it.

LPCM is a known and reliable representation. Anything else, even if theoretically equivalent, has to gain our trust. And the problem with TrueHD on non-Sony titles has been the Dialog Normalization of TrueHD ruining the surround balance.

Lossless, except for screwing around with the carefully crafted balance?! C'mon!

So far Sony has done an extraordinary job releasing key foreign language titles on Blu-ray. Every true fan of cinema should run out and support this. (The Lives of Others is incredible!).

Incidently, Robocop and Hollow Man are out soon for the Verhoeven fans. Basic Instinct is already out. And I really hope Lionsgate revists Total Recall, which is a rather poor transfer, with a special edition.

(Oh, and I already imported Starship Troopers from the UK )

It is beyond incredible. It was basically as if someone put together the scattered bits of my past and put them on film. But...that is another story!!

Can anyone confirm that the UK release is region free?

The website below indicates region free but amazon indicates region B.

I own the movie. Even though the back of the box says Region B, the movie & the special features work on a USA PS3.

Happy Birthday, Paul Verhoeven!

Just going through my 101 Films release of this on a US Sony Blu player, and everything works except... the newer "Book of Verhoeven"/Interview feature, which for some reason when I click it, it just recycles the menu.

Anyone else who bought that version have a similar issue?
