Watched this today (advanced screening). Avoid the second trailer if you haven’t seen it.
Highly recommended if you like thrillers and/or dark humor. The concepts are not ‘new’ but the way it’s told is quite fresh and feels more original. It has some horror elements and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Sophie Thatcher is great in it, and leaves another good impression after her role in Heretic (all the acting is good-to-great though). Difficult to review or discuss without spoilers, but go in as blind as possible if you like thrillers and/or horror comedies (with a bit of sci-fi). |

Five stars
Ever since their meet cute in a grocery store, where Iris, played by Sophie Thatcher, fell in love with Josh, played by Jack Quaid, at first sight, she has completely devoted herself to making him happy and to living a perfect life with him. As they arrive at a beautiful lakeside house to spend a weekend with others in the countryside, she voices her nervous apprehension about the trip, afraid that his friends will dislike her, that her awkwardness will put a damper on the occasion, and that she will screw up the entire weekend for him and everyone else. Josh gently reassures her, telling her that she has no reason to be worried and that everything will be okay. Unbeknownst to both of them, however, Iris is, indeed, about to screw up the entire weekend. The 2025 horror comedy, Companion, written and directed by Drew Hancock, captured my imagination months ago with its wondrously cryptic initial trailer, only to have its key plot details sadly divulged in a recent subsequent trailer. I often have no idea what goes through the minds of studio marketing teams these days, given their propensity to undermine their movies by creating spoiler-heavy previews. I think that this film is an absolute blast and I consider it to be a wildly fun five-star gem of blood-soaked cinematic mayhem, even though I was clued into its surprises beforehand, but I also implore prospective viewers to go into it blind if at all possible. Sophie Thatcher, who also shined in last year's scare spectacle, Heretic, is the main attraction of this blend of gore and hilarity, displaying an impressive dramatic range due to reasons that become apparent during the story. Jack Quaid, none other than the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, cements his acting mettle as well in a role that also throws some curveballs. Without delving into its twisty charms, I will say that I am impressed by the extent to which Companion immerses us in its insightful themes about one's desire for acceptance and about our inherent tendencies to confuse true love with ownership. Although I am a solitary person who has always had trouble attracting the opposite sex, I cannot fathom why other men in real life opt for choices similar to the ones made by the characters in this movie. I would rather be alone than experience anything less than a genuine honest-to-goodness connection with someone who challenges me to be a better person instead of simply catering to every whim of the person I already am. Thankfully, this screen story also cracks me up laughing while it gets the brain cells going. Last edited by The Great Owl; 01-31-2025 at 03:06 AM. |

I really enjoyed the movie. It would have been nice if the trailer hadn't given away so much of the plot.
[Show spoiler] Well worth catching in the theater. Sophie Thatcher turns in another good performance.

I’m glad to say that this movie lived up to the pre-release buzz. It’s a wild, clever, unique, and thoroughly entertaining thriller that keeps you on edge. It’s hard to believe that this is from a 1st time feature film director, Drew Hancock balances thriller and comedy elements seamlessly. It’s tense and gripping, it’s very funny when appropriate, and the cast have really solid chemistry. Sophie Thatcher does an excellent job at conveying a range of emotions as her character slowly realizes what’s going on and goes through changes. The film leads to a very satisfying and bonkers climax where I almost stood up and clapped. It is a bit unfortunate that WB decided to unveil that key plot point in the film’s 2nd trailer, but luckily there are quite a few more surprising twists and turns. There’s very little room for complaint with the film itself honestly, it’s one extra inspired twist away from being a 9/10 movie. Definitely an early Top 10 of 2025 candidate.
