i'm just curious what everyone else has done w/their HT purchases.
did you drop the $$$ on an entire set up (tv, recv'r, blu-ray, speakers) @ once or did u buy a piece here and there??? the obvious positive to buying here and there is saving up the money for each piece but then there is the excitement of getting everything all at the same time. i'm contemplating picking up a piece here and there every couple of months and then stack everything in the corner till i can put it all together. |

It's probably the smarter thing to buy piece by piece over time. It gives you the option to maybe catch a great deal you would have missed otherwise, and also you might come across something you like much more than what you originally intended on purchasing. Although, it is difficult to fight off upgradeitis.

I'm pretty impatient so I bought an Onkyo HTiB. It was nice instantly having a complete HT. However it wasn't all that long before I started wanting more. I've already replaced all the speakers and the subwoofer. The only thing left I'm still using is the receiver (and occasionally the Ipod dock), which I'm looking to upgrade again in a few months. The TV was a separate purchase, and all of the video game systems were accumulated over time.

For example, last year I wanted a Front Projection system. I chose my projector but decided to get a less expensive receiver and, at the time, I just moved my BD player from the other room to the theatre. In that way, I was able to get a functioning setup. Since then, I have upgraded the receiver to a Pioneer and next item on my list is to upgrade the BD player and add a Digital Video Processor. So, I would say it's a combination. |

I got my receiver first and then a few months later got my speakers and then the Sub...
It took me about 3 to 4 months before I had everything up and running...doing the actual set up with the speakers, receiver and wires is chore alone by itself. |

I buy them piece by piece. The main reason is cost. Unless you find an outrageous deal for all of the items, it's not worth it to buy all at once. I tend to watch for TV deals closer to Superbowl time. The other electronics, I usually wait for Black Friday going forward.
The main thing to remember about electronics is that there is always better and newer models being released. And the price tend to go down as well so there no great reason to really buy everything at the same time. |

A nice HT was something I always wanted for my house. I have a 5.1 in wall set upstairs, but I wanted an actual theater room. So, I finished the basement, bought all the equipment, chairs, did the treatments, all at once via the benefit of a home equity loan. 22k inclusive. Not something I recommend, but I devised the whole thing while being home sick for an extended period.
Debt is bad, no matter what. If you control it, have fun, otherwise, buying a piece at a time helps you to future-proof (a little bit) technology advances. Kccarl |

I have always purchased one piece at a time because in the long run, it will be cheaper. You will miss some great deals if you buy all at once. I have definitely saved thousands over the last decade by going slow. It is worth it. Damn, its already been a decade since I got into this nasty habit. lol.

I bought piece by piece as i discovered how much i was lacking in every area. I would find out there are better TV's out there and get one. Then find out my speakers are weak, my receiver can't decode, my blu-ray player has poor PQ, etc.....so I would keep improving on my set-up. Of course, we all know this more as upgraditis. Therefore, I'm sure I'll keep buying piece by piece for quite some time....as it never ends....never with upgraditis!

In a perfect world it would be nice to purchase a setup all at once. You could probably match the components up the best that way. Not too much of a factor unless your buying REALLY high end gear where you would be picky about what you match up with other gear ie; speakers and amps/processors etc.

I normally purchase few components at one time or at least plan for a system although a couple of components are purchased at one time just to ensure compatibility. Also if few items are purchased at one time a better discount can be negotiated.
