A lot of people might forget the cultural impact of the film. The soundtrack alone was 11x platinum and pretty much every time (I've Had) The Time of My Life plays in stores/restaurants or wherever a few women might sing along. There's definitely a nostalgia with this film and I'd imagine it's been a decent evergreen seller on dvd and blu. The movie was the first to sell over one million copies on vhs. It only had a budget of $4.5m and even then was expected to be a poor performer since it didn't go over very well with test audiences. Swayze had insane heartthrob popuarlity for this and Ghost and kind of surprisingly so considering was already in his mid to late 30s by this time.

Disney needs to license this one out to a label that will put it on Blu-ray. Just sick of them sitting on classic films like this. They still make some money off of it since it's licensed if they ever choose to do so. They have so many unreleased classics the money they could make off of license fees alone for distribution are crazy. Last edited by danny24; 02-28-2022 at 08:17 AM. |

“It’s just garnish.”
We watch that on VHS every Christmas. It will probably never come out due to both Disney and Kevin Spacey, which is a shame. The old DVD is still in print from Disney and will most likely get a run from Mill Creek. |

Dad: What are you watching? Mom: Ruthless People. They think he's killing that girl. Dad: Uh-huh. And what are they doing instead? Mom: Uhm...something else. Love this movie. |

I don't understand Disney's strategy for their Touchstone / Hollywood Pictures movies. They've released some of the best known titles themselves, they've licensed some to Mill Creek and Kino Lorber, but there's a lot of well known titles like this and Stakeout and even Three Men And A Baby, which are still unreleased. If they aren't interested in releasing them, why don't they just licence them? They can't all be waiting for James Cameron to approve the transfers.

They have their own weird criteria and are basically squatting these movies now, which I don't get in most cases. Something like Stakeout isn't going to be shown on Disney+ in the US. I get that titles like the Pauly Shore movies are still probably good sellers on dvd. But I don't see why they wouldn't release them on blu or quietly hand them over to a boutique label. It's not like their brand will be diminished. They complain about streaming and then don't even offer their entire catalog on Disney+ or keep most of these catalog films around $17.99 for digital purchase.

While there’s inevitably more, the only Touchstone movie I know to be on streaming is The Nightmare Before Christmas, and that’s only because Disney decided TNBC wasn’t a Touchstone film anymore. Of the rest, some lucky ones made it to Blu-ray, but well over half are still stranded on DVDs.
Some, like The Ref, are a letterbox laserdisc transfer dropped on a DVD. So an awful transfer that was used to produce awful tapes and awful laserdiscs in the 90s was then used to create an awful DVD, and that awful DVD is still “the best” that’s out there in 2024. Even more insulting, watch J. K. Simmons’ bit from the 2022 Oscars. They play a quick scene from The Ref, and it’s fully restored. It’s at least a damn good 2K master. Disney is not just sitting on movies, but superior finished transfers as well. The Ref was not a special occasion. There are inevitably hundreds if not thousands of other movies where restored transfers are just sitting there. Consider these same 20+ year old DVDs are still circulating, better transfers exist, and me and millions of others have poured lots of our hard-earned money into Disney, it’s a serious kick in the balls when they do this. |

Of course it's the mouse were talking about here. Pretty sure $$$ signs are all they really care about. You want Ruthless People in 1080p, fine go pay $17.99 and stream it. It's like they dont want the boutique labels to have these titles because they just want or think people will just pony it up and pay for the streaming versions. I don't know why they won't license titles out but I hope they do at some point. Lots of great movies that would look better on Blu-ray and UHD and the boutique labels always have to pay licensing fees. Apparently though not good enough for the mouse. |
