The most interesting part was left out of the first post: it's supposedly a sequel to a movie Fincher didn't direct.

He updated with the additional detail about it apparently being a sequel to someone else’s film

I know there’s a strong chance it’s World War Z sequel, but I would genuinely be interested in a Spy Game sequel from Fincher.

Could be Brad Pitt returning as Cliff Booth. Maybe Tarantino is letting Fincher direct one of his story ideas for that character since he scrapped ‘Movie Critic’ that Cliff Booth would’ve been featured in.

I miss seeing Fincher movies in you know like an actual movie theater. I hate what has happened to my favorite director.

Maybe it’s an adaptation of Less Than Zero’s sequel novel, Imperial Bedrooms.

I wouldn’t worry too much about Netflix being behind this, they let Greta Gerwig get a theatrical release for her movie, I’m sure Fincher will too.

He hasn't pushed for one up until now, I don't see why he'd start with this movie. I think he just doesn't particularly care for the theatrical experience, though the IMAX re-release of Se7en does cast doubt on that.

WORLD WAR Z 2 is the obvious answer but perhaps too obvious. Everyone knows he was developing that for years and it starred Brad Pitt so it would seem odd to portray it as a huge secret.

A more intriguing proposition is that it may be a sequel to CHINATOWN, possibly based on Towne's proposed third part to a Gittes trilogy.

Pitt wouldn't be my first choice to play Gittes - that would be Walton Goggins - but he wouldn't be the worst choice either. We know that Fincher has great respect for the original and that he'd been developing some kind of prequel series. This isn't likely to be a prequel if Pitt is playing Gittes but then we don't know that either - he might well play the Noah Cross-style villain of the piece.

This would be a far more exciting proposition to me than a WWZ sequel and is surely more in line with Fincher's recent aesthetics.

That being said, given the fact that Fincher seems to feel most comfortable elevating pedestrian material and the fact that very few people would react to a Chanatown sequel with more than a shrug, it's probably just WWZ 2.
