I was hoping Mann would use Tom Cruise and Fox together again. They were so good in Collateral. Too bad..now that cast would have made the movie a real blockbuster. Still..it is a damn good movie.

Is Miami Vice still a popular franchise that will draw in a non-nostalgia audience? I don't know. Surprised they want to dive into this again with a new director.

The show was interesting but the movie, just okay IMO.

You probably could've said the same about Top Gun, and Kosinski was able to turn that into a huge hit. I can see how a studio would think he can do it again for Miami Vice, though I also think it probably has a limited audience.

True, although Top Gun 1 was a hit too.
I think Kosinski is a good director though, so I can see this being a better film. Tron 2, Top Gun 2, Oblivion. Good.

Mann is good too, but that wasn't a great script and not much excitement in the film IMO. Of his films, Heat is still the best one IMO. Collateral was interesting. I'd have to rewatch Last of. Public Enemies, okay. Manhunter, some really like that film. Thief, some really like that one too. Miami Vice, okay. Insider, interesting. Ali, not too bad. Blackhat, not too good. Need to watch Ferrari.

Miami Vice and Public Enemies are two of Mann's best films.

Do what The Untouchables did and set it in the mid-80's. Only way to really differentiate itself from Mann's film.

Heat
Collateral

I didn't care for Thief, The Keep, Manhunter, Last of the Mohicans, Miami Vice (2006), or Public Enemies. I don't have any interest in his other movies.

The 2006 film was a complete misfire imo. The two leads had no onscreen chemistry and the storyline was underdeveloped in exchange for stylistic choices on Mann's part. He tried to remove the series from its 1980s setting and it didn't work.

It lacked pretty much everything that made the 1980s series iconic.

Leave it (the IP) alone.

I think that this'll be closer to the show in tone than it will be to Mann's gritty approach.

A tone that will be missed, but maybe a need just to have something lighter.

I'm not trying to knock Kosinski. He's made some stellar films like Tron Legacy, Only the Brave and Top Gun Maverick. And elements of Oblivion even worked (mainly Andrea Riseborough )

I think he needs a strong producer. The Netflix movie he made after Maverick was pretty weak.

And also ALI!

Now that THE KEEP and BLACKHAT, after their disastrous releases in 1983 and 2015, are finally starting to be seen as unfairly maligned films! We might get remakes or sequels of THE KEEP, BLACKHAT and MANHUNTER before the releases of HEAT 2 and Joseph Kosinski's MIAMI VICE!

Liked the 2006 version from the first watch, but it has grown into one of my favourite Mann films over the years. It’s a masterpiece as far as I’m concerned.

If anyone hasn’t read film critic Jean-Baptiste Thoret’s writing on Miami Vice (2006) and Mann in general, I highly recommend it.

Yes and No. In terms of tone and atmosphere, yes, the 2006 film is quite a bit more dark and gritty. But in terms of actual plot points and story, the 80s series is actually darker and more tragic. I was reluctant to give the series a try because it just seemed too campy for me, but when I finally decided to watch it I quickly realized that camp was needed to give levity to all the tragic stuff that happens in a lot of the episodes. It's now my favorite tv series, and the 2006 film is still one of my top ten favorite movies.

I'd guess the problem is that he basically went with modern style for it rather than 80's revivalism which people seemed to want.
Mann did the right thing with the 2006 film. If they had tried to replicate the style and look of the tv series the film would have fallen flat on its face.

I think the 2006 film is superb. It's certainly worthy of multiple viewings and more and more viewers seem now to appreciate it's distinctive aesthetic and action sequences.

Remaking the 1980s series in the same style in a movie at that point in time would have been completely pointless for so many reasons.
