Default X-men 3 question

I thought that I read that this movie has stunning picture. To me, it is quite grainny. Anyone else have this issue? The only perfect or near perfect movie that I've watched so far is Shooter...

That doesn't help. Have you experienced this watching X3? Or is something wrong with my setup? Samsung HLT5687s, Monster Cable & PS3.

If 'Apocalypto' looked grainy on your tv, then it's your set-up.

I just popped it in. It looked amazing. Must be the way they filmed X3?

Yep, the grain is inherent in the print/DI. If you go to a movie next time, make a mental note every time you see grain on screen because then you can tell others how it might look like on BD.

Print aka release print refers to the actual 35mm film. VERY few video masters are done using release prints. PREVIOUSLY, the HD master is done using 1 generation OFF the master negatives.

Now most production with a good budget will employ DI - Digital Intermediate - to edit and color-correct the movies on the computer. This DI is then used to make the release print and the HD master.

X-Men 3 is grainy when they shot it in Super35, so the DI (that was scanned from the film stock) is grainy too. The VFX of course has to match this graininess.

Before Digital Intermediates, most movie prints you saw on theaters followed this chain:

Camera negative -> interpositive -> internegative -> release prints

Hopefully, good video transfers are not made from prints

Now with DIs, they can be generated from the DI

Camera negative/digital sfx -> DI

The X-men III BD looks sharper and better on my screen than it looked on the two different 35mm anamorphic prints theatrical projections I saw it in.

No smoothie here.

I thought X3 looked quite good. The only scene I remember being a little problematic was the fog scene at the lake.

Maybe I am biased due to the fact most all Paramounts titles do not have lossless audio, but I don't remember being blown away by Shooter at all, I was in fact disappointed....Casino Royale was nice though!

2.40:1 aspect ratio. You will see bars at the top and bottom of your HDTV.
