Yeah, it is typically the director’s call, though Denis seemed to be surprised when he heard Dune wasn’t already available on IMAX on disk. So I think some directors don’t care that much about home media and are more focused on the theater experience, while some care a lot about the home presentation (think about the way Kubrick shot some of his films with a 1.33 TV version in mind)

In an ideal world we’d get a choice, since for me sometimes I prefer constant aspect ratio and other times I prefer the IMAX versions, but that’s very rare that we get that. And then there are some releases like Avatar: The Way of Water where I don’t even know why a 2.39 version is made (which was theaters only).

I do hope this film's home video release has the expanded aspect ratio.

Recently saw the film in IMAX, and the "music transcends" scene may be the best implementation of the IMAX aspect ratio since the skyjump scene from M:I Fallout. One can argue it can get away with staying strictly in the 2.76 aspect ratio (still too wide a ratio for IMAX, IMO), since most of the scenes you can get away with reframing or cropping a lot of the sky or ground and not miss significant information. Still, I cannot imagine watching [ENDING SPOILER WARNING]
[Show spoiler]Old Man Preacher Boy's face covering the entire frame
being cropped to that ratio; that had to be blocked to be seen in full.

Anyway, kinda love the film. The script is not the film's strongest suit, particularly in how it structures the climax, but it definitely carries on with the imagery, the well-rounded cast, the charm behind the monsters, and of course the music. It's From Dusk till Dawn meets O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and it's that oddball combination that makes it feel special.

To motivate the paying audience to watch the movie in IMAX, and it always works. The standard theatrical ratio is meant to be a deterrence.

I wouldn't take this as official confirmation, but DP Autumn Durald Arkapaw seems to imply that there will be shifting ratios on the Blu-ray release in this Instagram story:

To translate for those of you unfamiliar with Instagram, Kevin McCarthy (the interviewer who also asked Denis Villeneuve about IMAX ratio on the Dune 2 Blu-ray) was doing a Q&A. Here's the flow of the conversation:

Question: When are you interviewing Coogler again to ask about Blu-ray aspect ratios?

McCarthy: Haha. I'll defer to @addp (Autumn Durald Arkapaw).

Arkapaw: @kevinmccarthytv You'll see the pop!

McCarthy: Yesssssssss!

Except Blade Runner 2049 looks AWFUL opened up to IMAX. Roger Deakins agrees. At least Dune does not.

Dang. I can't lie, I was hoping for a constant 2.76:1 version. The IMAX shots were framed for 2.76:1, so I'd love to watch it the way it was framed.

Hopefully there's a way to watch it in 2.76:1 on a streaming service, kinda like how Nolan films are a constant 2.39:1 / 2.20:1 on streaming.

I guess it will be the constant 2.76 & Dolby Vision on digital and 2.76 / 1.78 & HDR10 on disc.

Amazon's now sold out of the Steelbook. Could've pre-ordered it yesterday, but that's on me. The hype is growing.

And you would get it early. I preordered the standard from Gruv for $24.

Gruv doesn't charge immediately for preorders. You'll get charged exactly 8 days before release, since that's when it will ship out. They run things well in that regard. You can also get 20% off with their signup code.

Too bad I already used the code for the Universal Classic Monsters boxset.

Paypal is nice just to avoid any future surprise charges whenever they decide to ship it. Once you checkout, you're done and don't have to worry about it.

Sure, but that's the exact opposite of what the other guy seems to want.

Excellent news. I genuinely can't imagine how a fixed 2.76 version would have the same impact.
