Kind of a cool idea. Would make a nice presentation for the colorful Ghibli Steelbooks as one example. Crunchyroll are also offering it for free now if you buy 4 Steebooks from them, which is a great offer if you were planning to buy stuff anyway.

I like it but am broke right now haha. I think it would be cool to store like you said a series of them to display on the shelf.
