Germany Breakdown (1997) 4K blu-ray from Turbine

https://turbine-shop.de/search?search=Breakdown

Didn’t find a separate thread for this German version from Turbine. But please merge if one for this German version already exists.

Will be curious to compare it to the mediocre 4K disc from Paramount. Turbine sometimes does some questionable practices to their transfers, so we’ll see.

Here’s my writeup from the Paramount UK thread:

Disc is a BD-66, it’s a LSP encode and solid as always but it’s the same grain-managed master Paramount released on BD and their 4K. I don’t have the latter to compare. I doubt it though that the Turbine’s gains are ultimately that significant due to the image processing in the master. Poor and great image sections alternate wildly, sometimes from shot to shot and within the same frame too. Most noticeably are many of the skies that got thoroughly grain-blitzed and stick out like a sore thumb against otherwise nicely preserved grain. I don’t see anything irregular in the master beyond Paramount’s tinkering, so no Turbine fake grain and neither unnatural / boosted colors or brightness levels.

The included BD is also well-encoded but Paramount’s is also okay. Of course, the BD’s comparative softness does a bit of damage control against the DNR, so this may actually be a preferable option for some but you don’t need to upgrade to this fancy Mediabook for that.

Caps will reveal if this is indeed a noteworthy upgrade to the Paramount 4K but again I wouldn’t count on it and encourage a blind buy.
I’ve watched the entire film after writing this and am sure that Turbine ported over the Paramount master as-is with baked-in DNR. The grain that’s there doesn’t look fake to me and I’d also say that they didn’t mess with the colors or HDR. Can’t say anything about the sound but they’d have probably gone full-on Atmos had they thought about doing a remix.

Still looking forward to comparisons though!

Nobody yet has done a comparison between the 66GB version and Turbine's 100GB version?

It's a decent upgrade. There are some real oddities in the master, though:

(The caps here are of BL only. From other caps here, it seems like Paramount's disc relies on FEL to expand brightness.)

Yeah.....a little while back when I first looked at the difference, at least grain wise, between the Blu-ray and the Paramount 4K......I was not impressed and decided to hold off upgrading. This looks a bit better and I may have to bite......

****The movie must be very popular in Germany to have 4 different cover options. WOW!

No, that is just the current situation of the market in Germany. Get everything in mediabooks, make as many cover versions as possible, and limit them as narrowly as possible.

The results:

1. People get acute FOMO and will not wait for the disc to be released and for the actual quality to be good, but will blindly pre-order as soon as it is announced in order to get their preferred cover.

2. There is a whole scene of packaging collector's in Germany who will buy every movie (doesn't matter if it is the worst sh*t ever produced), as long as it comes in a mediabook. And if there are multiple cover versions, they will buy the corresponding number of copies of the same movie to have every cover in their collection. Of course they will not open the plastic wrapping of any of those mediabooks but put them on their shelf unopend because they believe they will become valuable someday due to the different cover versions being strictly limited.

A few years ago, some crappy splatter movie got a simultaneous release in 30 (!) different cover versions (most of the motives were only still photographies of the most extreme splatter scenes with the title slapped on), and some people then bought this movie 30 times to get each cover. I am not kidding you.

If you go to Turbines own shop, you will see that you can buy BREAKDOWN in a bundle version with all four covers.

Could buy.

Though since recently, Turbine usually offers one unlimited variant of mediabooks as well (which is often the German theatrical art and thus the most popular), like with Breakdown here.
