If it's R-15, then it could have optical censorship. I know the laws on this have been relaxing over the years, especially with non-Japanese works, but I think films with uncensored genital nudity still require an R18+ rating from Eirin, although interestingly, I can't find where it was rated on the Eirin site, as "肉体の悪魔" only brings back a result for Claude Autant-Lara's Devil in the Flesh (1947).

Apparently the fully uncut version is gone forever, but there is that "director's cut" with the RoC scene, which, depending on what source you read, is either 113 minutes or 117 minutes at 24 fps. The UK cut is 107 minutes on 25 fps PAL DVD and would be 111 minutes at 24 fps, so at the 113 minutes quoted by the back cover, I'm not certain that the film is the "director's cut" and I feel like if it were, there should have been news in the UK or US first.

I would proceed with caution.

113 mins sounds about right to me. I believe that's the runtime of the bootleg that's been making the rounds for years. The Rape of Christ scene is only a couple of minutes long, and the scene at the end with Grandier's bone is brief. As you said, the complete and total director's cut is seemingly gone for good... unless there's more material in the WB archives. Rescue mission!

Game of Thrones on Blu-ray in Japan has blurred dicks in it! There's not a lot of documentation on Japanese home video releases of international films though! From what I can see it's down to whether or not a distributor interprets the film as being porn. If it was porn it would have to be censored oddly enough. So really it's hard to say! There's little to no info out there on how Japanese boutique labels have worked around the laws. They got quite a few releases too. Guess someone'll have to take one for the team and see!

They certainly used to. Years ago I made a post about Rome, which I imported from Japan myself to see if the censoring was actually happening, and indeed it was, but apparently only to genitalia and not pubic hair. I know that even Japanese productions can now show pubic hair without censorship, but again, the rating has to be at a certain level, which I guess is R-15, though many Japanese releases don't carry their ratings at all and overseas works don't seem to need one if they're only going out on video.

Now, though, the few releases that do make it to Japan are usually worldwide releases and the Japanese versions have R-18 ratings on them. For example, House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season:

Do iiiiiiiiiiit. I would, but I have to save up for The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, coming from the world’s most expensive boutique label, and The Devils isn’t on my list of all-time faves. But if this release turns out to be ‘good enough’ I might go for it.
