Default Blu-ray Drive Recommendation for Mac (macOS Sequoia) - Replacing ASUS BW-16D1X-U

I'm looking for recommendations for a reliable external Blu-ray drive for my iMac, primarily for ripping Blu-rays (extracting clips, etc.).

I've just gone through a lengthy process with an ASUS BW-16D1X-U. For months, I experienced very slow disc recognition with various Blu-ray discs (including newer Warner Archive releases and other standard Blu-rays).

Now I'm in the market for a new drive and want to make a more informed choice to avoid similar frustrations.

I'd be grateful for specific brand and model recommendations from other Mac users who are successfully and reliably ripping Blu-rays on recent macOS versions. What drives have you found to be workhorses? Are there any particular models known for good Mac compatibility and ripping performance that you'd suggest I look into, or any I should definitely avoid based on your experiences?

Thanks in advance for your help and insights!

Very slow disc recognition? What does ASUS say about macOS support?

I talked to the ASUS staff regarding the BW-16D1X-U model. They advised me to get it repaired. I sent the model for repair. Earlier this week, they didn’t mention anything regarding Mac support. ASUS mentioned that they have no stock to replace my unit and no comparable*model can be offered. For this reason, they would like to proceed with the buyback of my unit.

Could you recommend a model? I’m leaning towards either the LG Electronics Ultra Slim Portable Blu-ray/DVD Writer Optical Drive - BP60NB10 or the Maitlan SuperDrive. Although the latter is an unknown brand, the user mentioned in a review that their drives play exceptionally well with their MacBook Pro.

I've been very happy with this model from OWC.

OWC are Mac hardware enhancement specialists. I would tend to trust that their recommended devices will work.

However, with the decline in availability of BD drives of any sort, it might be a good idea to talk to them directly before ordering to be sure this drive will work the way you need.

Thanks for the recommendation RFK!

I spoke with customer support and got my questions answered. Their responses convinced me to make the purchase, so I went ahead and bought it.

Your profile picture is great, and coincidentally, "Sherlock Jr." is among my favorite Buster Keaton films.

While I was tempted to place an order immediately I thought it would better if I held of and talked to them directly about its performance and reliability for ripping Blu-ray discs on macOS.

Based on my conversation with the representative it seems that the drive is tested for Blu-ray ripping, playback, and burning on macOS and Windows, and utilizes the LG WH16NS40 internal drive. Furthermore, they mentioned the quick and reliable disc mounting, and also mentioned technical support.

I just bought a second LG BP50NB40 as a backup to the one I use now. After flashing the firmware it works great for backing up my Blu-ray and UHD discs with MakeMKV.

I'm sitting on two LG internal writers and my Pioneer USB writer. It sounds like LG might be the only player left in this game as the cost on the Pioneers has gone up a lot in the past month. I'm seeing near $150 for some drives.

It's interesting you brought up the LG BP50NB40, as I considered buying it. However, after reading Amazon reviews, I'm hesitant due to concerns about repeating the problems I experienced with the ASUS BW-16D1X-U.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely buy that Blu-Ray external drive if I need another one.

Thanks for the sharing! I was unaware that external Blu-Ray drives had limited manufacturers and that LG is now the remaining one. My research on Pioneer drives mostly turned up negative reviews.

I have 2 LG NB40 also ... sort of.

(Edit - I use it with a mac mini no concerns about Mac troubles.)

I gave one to my daughter and bought another one. I hope she understand that she needs to give it back if she ever wants to part with it.

As far as concerns ... I have none. I have made well over 1000 MKVs with this model.

It bothers me when online tutorials suggest MakeMKV is free but I'm glad I purchased it and there's no way I could use something to that extent without paying for it.

Edit 2 - This is the item I bought twice and came with a NB40 both times. it also looks right at home with my Mac Mini style wise
