Default Best Buy Expands Blu-ray Collection

Just an FYI, I went into my local Best Buy today and before Blu-Ray and HD-DVD shared one side of a full isle with Blu-ray taking up 2/3 and HD-DVD taking up a 1/3. Today, the Blu-ray isle has expanded to one full isle with HD-DVD using about a 1/4 of another isle shared with TV Show DVDs.

I wonder if this is in response to Target's move to expand their blu-ray collection. I walked out with House of a 100 Corposes, Alexander and Deliverance. I'm watching House of 1000 Corposes now--picture quality is fantastic!

Individual BBs are free to organize those shelves how they see fit. My BB has a full rack of each. So this is not the sign of a larger trend

That's true, I should have clarified. However, it should be known that I've been shopping at the same Best Buy buying blu-rays since December and this is the first shelf migration that I've seen.

I work for Best Buy & they can't organize things they want because sometimes companies pay for certain arrangements with end caps & aisles. They also depend on the store concept meaning the layout of the store. Not to mention they're are planograms to follow that show the merchandising team how things need to setup and displayed & it has to be SOP.

My nearest Best Buy continues to be near to 50%/50% for media. But for players it's big time tilted Blu.

In the store I go to, when they first brought in hi-def discs, it was a very small rack with the DVDs, and some hi-def, the Blu-Ray/HDDVD was split exactly 50/50 probably delibretly, then the whole thing expanded as they movied it to a larger rack which was about 60/40 to Blu-ray, it stayed that way for a while.

I visited it the other week and they'd rearranged the whole store layout (including more prominently displaying the iPod.. i want a 3G nano *cry*), now the hi-def discs were spread across two displays and from a distance I didn't see the HD DVDs, because it was almost all Blu (80/20, or 90/10.. ish with the reds on the lower shelves, its hard to estimate with some discs filed with their sides facing you and others with the fronts facing you, but its definently swamped in Blu).

I still haven't seen anyone but me buying from there or even browsing the discs, but i know they do, cause some of the popular titles were sold out and they have about 2-4 copies of each title on the display by now. Someone must be buying them (other than me) or they wouldn't keep expanding. I spend at least 15 mins browsing the BDs on the 18th (buy-a-thon day) and didn't see anyone else stop to browse either of the hi-def discs. I feal like stalking the display to find out who else is buying, but then I'd look suspiscious like a shoplifter, so I'd have to get a job there instead if i wanna find out, which i can't be bothered.

I wish I could say the same about my local BBy. The ratio between BDs and hd-dvds on the shelves seems to change from month to month. For a while over the summer, Blu had overtaken the # of hd-dvds.

But today I went there and picked up House of a 1000 Corpses and Purple Rain and it was equal: 2 five-shelf risers for each format with a sign over each section that said "Next Generation".

I will say this for my BBy. Today was 1st time that I could actually find every BD that I was looking for. Even had this week's releases which has never happened before meaning I had to wait a week or later to get new releases there.

The Best Buy near me just expanded their Blu Ray section to a full aisle and expanded the HDdvd section to 75% of an aisle on the opposite side. Previously, it was one aisle split 50/50.
Are you sure you're using the right term? An aisle frefers to the entire passageway, usually like 5-6 racks per side.

I have been in a lot of BBs, but I've never seen one even APPROACHING a full aisle of HD media

I have 4 Best Buys near me, and they all seem to be laid out the same way. The main area where hi-def movies are kept, right next to DVD box sets of television shows, has one section for Blu-ray and one section for HD DVD. There is only one more scattered row of HD DVD somewhere around the small LCD tv section, but Blu-ray has one more full section by the blank media aisle, and several other single rows by Sony and Samsung Blu-ray player setups.

So I definitely think that Blu-ray is more visible.

In my area BB it is still 50/50. Each has two 4 foot sections, half the ilse on one side only.

Now, in the home entertainment area, there is the end cap of Blu Ray with the movie pre-views showing on a high def monitor & player and additional movie selections - latest releases on display.

The BB's I go to still have two shelves for each format. I don't know why I bother, Fry's is so much cheaper. For example the MI Collection and Planet Earth are $99.99 at BB and at Fry's they are $69.99.

I had noticed the Blu-ray space increasing at Target, before it became official. I have also noticed my Walmart going from 2 shelves each for both formats to 4 shelves for Blu and 2 shelves for Red.

Good trends all around!

And even if these are localized events - one thing that is the same everywhere - nobody is coming into forums and saying, "Hey, did everyone notice HD DVD is getting more shelf space?" . . . just doesn't seem to be happening anywhere. I sure hope Blu-ray can put HD DVD to bed this holiday. I really want this thing to be over soon.

Don't we all? My predition: both formats will survive well in to 2008, without being picked up by your average user. Perhaps Blu-ray players and discs will be the gift of choice for xmas 2008 but not 2007...

you can openly mock me after I'm prooved wrong.
