Yes, Kuruvi is not that great, I think that is the concencious. Good to see Ayan on blu - it is indeed a blockbuster. Looks like Ayngaran is delaying Kuruvi due to some reason. Perhaps both Kuruvi and Ayan would be released together. So far the best South Indian blu-ray is Sivaji, IMO, with excellent PQ.

However, IMO, it has some minor issues that places it slightly behind Saawarriya. The first issue is the inconsistent PQ throughout the movie. Some parts are excellent and breathtaking. Some parts are lacking that richness and clarity. For example, the first two songs are really beautiful and absolutely breathtaking picture quality. However, the song Orukoodai Sunlight is lagging behind, it is lacking clarity and richness at least in some parts within the song. I could see ugly DNR (digital noise reduction) and edge enhancement (EE) raising their evil heads. That really stains the breathtaking beautiful picture that could have been seen (similar to the first song). I also could notice electronic noise (not film grain) in some isolated parts. EE and DNR could be noticed time to time. I feel that theses might have been inherited from the digital intermediate (DI) rather than introduced during the transfer process. In that case, blu-ray transfer cannot fix these issues. It is not needed to apply (excessive) DNR and EE during the transfer if the DI is in good quality or it is a high quality scan. If mild DNR/EE is needed, it has to be applied with utmost care under strict QC guidelines. QC should use high quality large screen (at least 60” better if 100” or higher) and be viewed at 2 scope screen heights. Although 40” to 60” is the current norm, in few years time it would be 60” to 100”. When people sit closer in relation to the screen size, they would see ugly DNR and EE, if they have 20x20 vision. That would stain the movie and will give it a bad name. Sivaji is an excellent effort and can be used as a benchmark by all other authoring houses and studios. We do not want to see any Indian blu-rays inferior to Sivaji. Wish to note the key decisions recently made by Sony Pictures (after considering member votes and other factors) in relation to blu-ray transfers and I expect all Indian blu-ray transfers would comply with those decisions: 1. Use of DTS HD-MA as loss less audio 2. Placing subtitles completely within the picture. Subtitles need to be scaled to match 1080p HD picture. Sivaji can be taken as an example. ![]() |
