That's not just the encode, the Kino is blatantly noise reduced and so has a very soft muddy image compared to the Radiance, even though they're using the same master. Perhaps Radiance were canny enough to ask for something better from the licensor?

It's likely that Kino's disc filtered but the master itself might not be as filtered (ex: compare Scorpion's "The People Next Door" being filtered on their disc but Indicator's release isn't).

Something fishy there. Image is brighter too. I thought this was restored by Kino but the back of the disc (from blu-ray.com) says new 2K master approved by Ueli Steiger. Kino's website adds color graded by Steiger. Radiance says 2k restoration by Kino OVERSEEN by Ueli Steiger. And Blu-ray.com says 2k restoration. Most of the stuff I've seen from Kino say when they have been restored. When they say new 2k, 4k master, they usually say from wherever/by whatever studio. Why then just say it's a new 2k master?

This is also one time where the "size" of the encode just doesn't matter. The Radiance has a slightly lower bitrate than the Kino, but is clearly still a far superior encode with less artifacting. Fidelity in Motion to the rescue! |

Does anybody have any idea what the difference is between the Radiance limited edition and the Radiance release coming up?
They look the same to me but I can't find any more info. |

The regular release is the same disc in slightly different packaging (different type of case, no obi, probably no reversible sleeve), with no booklet.

The Kino Lorber Insider did confirm that "someone else" picked up the rights to the film:

Just watched this last night - surprised the Radiance release didn’t end up with its own thread, but doesn’t seem worth to start one over this.
I had to watch with subtitles due to it being late night limiting my volume, some of the accents, and having a fan running (very appropriate film for one of the hottest days of the year in the UK). I noticed at least one glaring error in the subtitles, and possibly there were more: Should say‘stayin' instead of eta yin’. Also think there was one later on where the subtitles said “Oi! Wake up!” but the dialogue sounded more like just “Wake up! Wake up!” to me - but I could be wrong, I just wouldn’t even expect the word ‘oi’ to pop up in this setting, seems more British. I’m wondering if its an issue exclusive to the Radiance release or if they used the same subs as KL Good movie too, kinda wish I got the LE now (or waited longer for a better sale, £9.75 for this hurts when its been going for about £2 cheaper in all the more recent sales, but you never know right?) |

I'm not at home, right now, to double check my Kino disc but I would assume they're the same subs. I've noticed for a lot of MGM-licensed titles (I assume that these are from the studio "as-is" or transcribed by somebody whose first language isn't English) that subs have the habit of skipping lines or words mid-sentence or are just flat out wrong (ex: the Eureka of "The Barefoot Contessa" subs a line of dialogue that is suppose to be "the owner of Texas" to "the owner of "Wall Street").
