Three and half stars

This past Sunday, I attended the memorial service for my mother, who had passed away at the age of 79 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. The following evening, in an attempt to take my mind off of my grief, I ventured with two friends to the local theater for a “Scream Unseen” mystery feature, an upcoming horror movie that would be kept secret until the actual showing.

Since I find horror movies to be like pizza, in that even the bad ones are pretty good, I have always enjoyed the suspense of not knowing what a Monday “Scream Unseen” title will be until I am seated in the darkened theater to watch it. In this instance, however, on the day after the service for my mother, the mystery showing was for a film that I was nowhere near mentally prepared to see, a movie about a low-level criminal who is sentenced to community service at a retirement home, where he makes a terrifying discovery involving the elder abuse of its residents for a nefarious purpose on the mysterious locked fourth floor of the facility.

Fortunately for The Home, directed by James DeMonaco, I do not rate movies according to how they trigger my personal psyche if I happen to see them at the wrong time. All things considered, this is actually a solid good film that delivers generous helpings of intense and riveting sequences, although the squeamish with weak stomachs need not apply.

Pete Davidson, who has also appeared in The Suicide Squad (2021), Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022), and Fast X (2023), and who is one of those “I know that guy from somewhere, but cannot remember where.” actors to my eyes, is excellently suited for the lead role as a former foster kid-turned-delinquent, delivering a smirkingly beleaguered performance until the gory mayhem goes to Spinal Tap 11 during the final stretch. Bruce Altman, another “I know him from somewhere.”, is a perfect choice for the retirement home physician.

Fans of scary cinema will find a lot to enjoy with The Home.

The timing of this showing definitely could have been better, though.

My condolences to you The Great Owl, I’m so sorry of the passing of your mother and the timing of this specific title for you.

I was not a fan. The plot was interesting enough but even at 97 minutes the movie felt really long. Davidson was ok but I'm not sure he was the right actor for the role. If you enjoy violence, the film goes on a binge at the end.

[Show spoiler]The plot is about "the fountain of youth" but nearly all the characters look like they're in their 70's which worked against the concept. One of them claimed to be 128 but he looked 80 so while he was kept from dying, he wasn't youthful.
5/10.

can't stand Davidson but i am intrigued by the concept of this movie. Regarding the above spoiler, this actually sounds a little similar to
[Show spoiler]Cure for Wellness
, is it? (I mean the concept, i doubt stylistically it is similar).

[Show spoiler]The last 10 minutes was absolute bonkers.

Pretty loopy film, there’s lots of stuff that doesn’t quite make sense and there’s that demented third-act twist - would not be surprised to see this become a cult favourite

It's been a while since I've seen
[Show spoiler]"A Cure for Wellness"
so can't say for sure but the big one this reminded me of was
[Show spoiler]"Society", particularly once it was revealed the foster parents basically trafficking their adopted kids to be siphoned dry and the villains basically doing the Shunting without the conjoined body horror
.

Agreed with many of the reviews on here that the film is fine but it's the climax that makes the experience worthwhile.
