It seems like physical media in a sense is going the way of streaming: to get, watch item X you have to order it from Y retailer. Hope I'm wrong long term. At least when BB had exclusives there were normal versions released simultaneously

Studio heads think Steelbooks are what physical media collectors want. They’re not entirely wrong though, seeing as the Best Buy steelbooks were all the rage. but I agree, I’m tired of steelbook only releases. There needs to be a standard option for all releases.

This needs to include the Director’s Cut AND the Unrated Cut. Director’s cut is best and most complete.

Yes there are. The theatrical, the unrated edition, and the director’s cut. The only main difference I remember from these versions is with the ending but it’s been ages since I’ve seen them.

All 3 films only include the R rated cuts. This appears to be Lionsgate’s new standard with 4K releases.

There really is no excuse with this stuff. If they were being released by boutique labels, they would’ve included the Unrated cuts with HD inserts of the uncut footage. But Lionsgate is too lazy for that.

On one hand, sucks they didn't even get the unrated cuts included in the set.

On the other hand, the theatrical cuts are hard to find on Blu-Ray so........

edit: actually I just realized they'll probably do 6 theatrical-only so yeah, this sucks big time.

I believe so, yes. I remember them being released on DVD way back when the film was first released on the format.

The Unrated Edition was the first release:
https://www.blu-ray.com/dvd/Saw-III-DVD/961/

Several months later, the Director’s Cut arrived:
https://www.blu-ray.com/dvd/Saw-III-DVD/1575/

As far as the blu-ray format, I’m not quite sure which version was released on the format but I think it was the unrated edition.

I’m pretty positive this 4K will be the first time the theatrical cut has been made available on disc if Lionsgate is indeed releasing the R rated cuts only. EDIT: The back cover art is up on Amazon now. It is indeed only the R rated version.

Pretty sure the only way to get the director's cut on blu-ray is a French edition. I remember "finding" it online to give it a watch because the disc was hard to come by.

I get the negative trims might not exist anymore for the cut material of the series, but not even upscaling the DIs to include them in any form is a gigantic missed opportunity.

Well the cut material probably doesn't even exist in DI form either. They could (and should) have upscaled and regraded HD inserts to blend in more with the surrounding footage.

I mean, I used to love steelbooks and had to import several from Japan, Germany and the UK. But then I had to move, and packing up 3000+ movies with a lot of SBs gets HEAVY. From then on I started moving away from them, but have bought or not sold off the occasion one that really sings to me.

But for these to be Aamazon Exclusives, then you have Lionsgate with it's limited line, Criterion with this, Shout with that, Arrow on the other. It seems to me this is the same evolution that streaming has had, and it annoys me to no end.
