Not that such thing should be expected from Warner, but it’d be nice if we got various aspect ratios to choose from on this disc (one presentation in the original VistaVision 1.50, the other in 1.78 or 1.85) as opposed to having a cropped version be canonical.

VistaVision is designed to be cropped to get ratios from 1.66 to 2.00. All the trailers for the film show an aspect ratio of 1.85. Only IMAX theaters will get something close to the native VistaVision ratio, by slightly cropping the slides, but expanding the top and the bottom. That version doesn't make sense outside of IMAX theaters, it would just be way too much needless headroom when watching in the home.

As per an article on indiewire, the VistaVision prints will be projected at 1.50:1. Said article also clarified that the film wasn't entirely shot in VistaVision, but rather a mix of VV and Super-35. The Super-35 material was blown-up to VistaVision and intercut with the native VV footage.

This is certainly unique, probably a first. I don't think there's a 50s or 60s VistaVision film that was ever shown open matte.

How big is Super 35 compared to VistaVision? And how much of the film was shot in Super 35? I can't seem to find precise numbers in that article, though it's fair to assume it's a minority of the film.

Is PTA actually going to supervise this transfer or is it just another Waner Bros 4k release themselves?

Yeah, I think this definitely a first re: "full frame" 1.50:1 VV projection. I'm also curious re: exactly how much is Super-35. Super-35 with a 1.50:1 aspect would be a bit less than half of VistaVision. I recall approx. 20% of THE MASTER was shot "standard" 35mm, I wonder if this might be about the same ratio re: true VV vs. Super-35?

It seems that the IMAX 15-perf 70mm showings will come from a digital scan of the VistaVision negative, while both the 8-perf 35mm and 5-perf 70mm screenings will have prints actually struck from the VistaVision negative, no digital intermediate.

The four VistaVision Prints will be contact printed direct from the OCN (with the Super35 footage being optically blown up to VV negative).

The article says

Quote:
The 70mm (5-perf) version is an optical blow-up from the VistaVision-cut negative. It has slightly more grain and contrast, and its 1.85:1 aspect ratio matches the non-IMAX DCP presentations.
So ithe 5/70mm prints will not be be directly contacted printed from the VistaVision negative, but rather from an iinternegative created via an optical printer from the VV negative. That's why it can have a different aspect ratio and also why the optical printing and extra analog generation steps will result in more grain and contrast.

Thanks for the great and informative comment. Maybe the reason why the 15-perf 70mm prints will be made from digital scans of the negative is because the optical printing and extra analog generation steps you talk about would make it too grainy for IMAX screens, while that effect would be nowhere near as problematic with the 5-perf 70mm prints.

Looking forward to see here your thoughts on the VistaVision screening you'll see this sunday! I wonder if you'll see any visible grain spike in Super 35 sections of the film.

Unexpectedly, this is a
[Show spoiler]chase movie. The retrieval of a loved one from people with nefarious intentions and all the weight of current real-world implications on top of that.
Gotta give a lot of credit to Paul Thomas Anderson for how he filmed this, the second unit directors, and the sound team for how they captured the sense of story progression.

This, Sinners, and Weapons are a hell of a cinematic trio.

I'm expecting this to be a single disc like Sinners was.
