United Kingdom Best Buy coming to the UK

Not really Blu-ray news, but stick with me...

There are big signs up at the demolition site of an old Courts furniture store in Lakeside Retail Park in Essex saying that the first UK Best Buy store will be opening soon (once they finish knocking down Courts and rebuild it!).

They seem to get quite a few Blu-ray exclusives such as Hot Fuzz, Shaun Of The Dead before other retailers, I wonder if they will bring this kind of thing to the UK if they start getting bigger?

Best Buy gets a lot of knocks from time to time, but they really are a pretty decent place to buy a lot of gear from. None of their people are on commission, so you won't get hounded by salesguys looking for a buck! Other than online retailers, they have a great selection of BD's. My store here in Oakville, ON (west of Toronto, ON) has 3 full aisles of about 24', plus a lot of endcaps and in-aisle displays. They offer some pretty good deals too.

Congrats on BB coming to the UK! Competition is always a good thing! Maybe prices will go down!

John

Now that they've set foot in Europe, it's only a matter of time before Dublin gets a location. Don't be surprised if its within a year.

That would be excellent, fingers crossed!

Not that I buy a WHOLE LOT of stuff.. but as you said, it's all about competition and driving prices down which can only be a good thing!

Good news. Since Virgin/Zavvi went under there hasn't been much choice or competition on the high street. HMV's in-store Blu-ray prices are insane, this might give them something to think about.

Best Buy used to be a great chain in the U.S., in the 90's when it first became a national chain. Years of poor management and overexpansion has taken away most of what once made it great. It does not compete on price anymore as the Internet has taken that edge away, and service has always been mediocre. More competition is always better than nothing I guess.

I wonder where they got the money to open in the UK? They've talked about it for years. I assume their tie-in with CPW is paying the bills for now.

They'd be better to fix their business in the USA first.

You can't really compare new stuff to second hand stuff, though.

we need some new outlets here, if you want a disc on the high street its either Hmv, Hmv or? oh yeh Hmv.

i cant understand why the saisbury's, tesco's and the like havent gone to war with them like they did with Dvd.

But then if god had wanted us to shop in supermarkets he wouldn't have invented the t'internet would he?
