Why would it be cut if it contains both versions?

Because Payback was cut at '18' in 1999 by the BBFC for a 5 second sequence involving a butterfly knife, which used to be a very sensitive subject for the BBFC even in movies with adult certificates. The "Director's Cut" of Payback (which also features this sequence) could not be assumed to be uncut because it exists due to the director's (Brian Helgeland) unhappiness with the style, tone and ending of the original 1999 release, which was controlled by the producers and Mel Gibson.

However, the UK disc has been confirmed to be uncut and the film content is exactly the same as the uncut US R-rated film.

Warner Brothers never locks their Blu-ray Discs releases. Even if they are imposing on someone else's distribution rights, they will not use region coding.

I received the UK BD in the mail today, and can confirm the following specs:

Region Free - played in my region A player

TrueHD for both cuts
Butterfly knife scene is intact in both cuts

The movie is two separate encodes, not seamlessly branched, as the color timing varies greatly between the two versions.

I am a little worried about the inclusion of two separate encodes on one disc possibly impacting visual quality. It would have been better if they had used separate discs.

This is my worry, too. But I doubt Paramount will be releasing a set with both cuts AND TrueHD anytime soon in the U.S. Besides, their DC BD wasn't great either, what with only DD 5.1 and MPEG-2 on a BD-25, and I don't think they'd do a major overhaul on this title, as the only ever released one DVD of the theatrical cut anyway.

In fairness, the director's cut is pretty short. About an hour and a half in length. If a movie as long as The Godfather Part II can be squeezed onto a dual-layer disc, than so can 2 cuts of Payback.

II just got this today but need to spend some time comparing the US DC and the DC on this disc. Not sure if I should hang on to the US disc now.

Exactly, 90 mins DC and 97 for TC. This is no problem for a BD50. Picture and Audio quality very good for both cuts.

Really enjoyed the contrast and brightness for the Directors Cut. Both are good movies in their own right. I just prefer the Directors cut more.

Are there any special features on the UK edition?
Are they 480p?

Yes, all of the extras from the Paramount US Director's Cut disc, plus (these may be exclusive to the UK edition) the interviews from the original Paramount US DVD.

All video extras are in 480p.

Default Hey all

Hey guys, will the UK version of Payback play in my U.S. PS3? I much prefer the theatrical release versus the Straight Up cut but can't find it on the U.S. Amazon site. I just bought The Island on BD from Amazon UK and it was a great experience and reasonable price compared to the $50 or $60 the U.S. Amazon wanted.

But I don't see a region code listed for the Payback Bluray with both versions of the film on the Amzon UK site. I see above someone was pretty sure it would play on a Region 1 player here in the U.S., but I just want to make sure it'll play on my U.S. PS3.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide. I just got a hefty tax return and am looking to drop a good chunk of it to expand my HD collection (I also have a big collection of HD DVDs).

I just ordered the following BDs from Amazon in the past couple weeks:

The Hangover (Unrated Edition)
Michael Jackson: This Is It
A Time to Kill
16 Blocks
Sunshine (Danny Boyle's SciFi Flick... great black levels!)
I, Robot
Out of Time
Road House ("Pain Don't Hurt!"... RIP Swayze!)
The Usual Suspects
Crash
Flyboys
Universal Soldier ("I'm All Ears!")

And, probably my favorite movie of all time, or at least in my Top 5,

HEAT!

Is there really a better scene in cinema history than the bank shoot out?!

Anyway, glad I registered and look forward to posting more. Thanks again for anyone who can answer my Payback question.

Peace.

Boomindan

Boomindan,

Welcome! As someone posted above Payback is Region-Free so it should play in your PS3 just fine

PS Yes the "bank shootout" is one of the best filmed and edited scenes in movie history imo

What about the bonus features? Are they in PAL or will it play on a US PS3?
