They are having more sales in the last few months, but I agree that their regular prices are too high.

Target prices aren't fair since it is slightly more to compare with Best Buy but their hot deals are better in which sometime you would have two BDs for 30 bucks depending on the choices they have listed.
FYE, Blockbuster and more are just plain simple rip off compared to everything else out there. |

So why not keep buying from Amazon? Get Amazon Prime and preorder everything you want and you come out sitting pretty! Unless you're one of those who likes the B&M shopping experience, in which case, I can only empathize. I much prefer shopping at my PC.

Stores are trying to market Blu-ray as a premium product to the well-heeled consumer. They are drawing the bargain crowd into their stores via cheap dvds, not Blu-rays. That is why you rarely see decent pricing at the major retailers like Target and Best Buy. Sales are only used to draw consumers into stores, hoping the consumers will buy items with larger margins. I do not think you will see good across-the-board pricing on BD's until next Christmas. By then the format should have penetrated enough to lower standard prices.

But since when was profit per sale the most important thing? Overall profit should be the driving goal, and lower prices with more sales could easily amount to greater profit. They need to find the sweet spot where it's low enough to motivate people to buy, but not so low that they can't make enough money on the sale. And I assure you, 30+ dollars is NOT the sweet spot. Far too few are willing to buy at that price, not just of new converts but also existing BD fans. Best Buy is kind of hit or miss. Their deals range from great to meh and their normal prices range from good to terrible. |

The problem is, unlike savvy/educated shoppers like us, the general public doesn't shop around. Instead they go into the Walmarts and Targets of the world and see $29.99 for a BR and are instantly turned off by the price and it confirms their belief that blu-ray is just too darn expensive.

Two words: Maximizing profit
Unfortunately, unless we know their profit function, we won't know what that point should be. I think it has more to do with keeping blu-ray prices greater than DVD prices. And we all know their DVD prices are just as outrageous. ![]() I buy on sale or at Amazon. |

Deals can be found if you look.. I have got many Blu's cheaper than you can get the DVD version for.. just have to hunt for the deals..
Yeah sad about the average person that doesn't know better though and thinks most movies cost $30. on Blu Ray. |

Not too long ago I was purchasing from Blockbuster, spending $30 for each Blu. Now, I do not purchase a single Blu in store if it is above $20, unless it is a TV season or film series. Best Buy has excellent deals sometimes and they have a wide collection of $15 Blus. I almost bought Fifth Element there yesterday for that price, but its so close to Black Friday and November has so many more releases that I decided against it. But stores like Blockbuster, Target, Walmart, and FYE are not going to lower their prices until consumers cease purchasing Blus/DVDs at insane prices. Stores like these are the reason many haven't adopted Blu yet. If people realized that Blu shouldn't be as expensive as they are, maybe people would stop buying at retail and start shopping online. Then, retail stores will start lowering prices and the world will live in peace. But since too many stubborn consumers exist and they will for a long time.

The new tactic used by the studios and the retailers is very easy to decipher. Charge a premium in the first week of release, and discount the title very quickly after that. A super high profile release like Transformers 2 will follow a different trend.
