Default Been gone for 3 months. How has Blu-ray changed?

Well, I have been in boot camp for the Marine Corps for 3 months with no news on the outside world. Before I left, I started collecting blu rays. I graduated today and am still in love with blu ray. Before I start buying more movies, I just want to know if there is anything new I should be aware of before making any purchases. Or is it all pretty much the same as it was 3 months ago.

Congratulations Marine! Remember this, your heart belongs to blu-ray but your *ss belongs to the marines!

You missed out on a lot of blu-rays in the past three months. Someone will create a list for you every movie released in the past three months.

How about instead of volunteering someone, you do it yourself

Oh, look what we have here, someone with some attitude. I like that. I would do it but many of these members know where to look without typing everything down. There's your answer.

Just start here and keep clicking through the pages. It starts with this past Tuesday's releases, and goes back as far as you want.

Congrats, by the way.

Mathias927,

Among other things, the Paramount "Sapphire Series" releases of Gladiator and and Braveheart really shook things up - Gladiator most notably. Ghostbusters also brought about a lot of controversy over film grain. Crank 2 - High Voltage recent release has been met with joy, pain and frustration over items such as its enjoyability and playback issues. The Wizard of Oz release a few days ago has been given a lot of attention, and if you are interested in it, you have several purchasing options.

The summer had some nice sale price weeks at B&M stores, but the good sales have tapered off in the last month or so.

Welcome back to Blu-ray!

Well...here are some technical WINS and FAILS:

The epic unicorn WIN and FAIL would be Gladiator. Finally on Blu-ray Disc after being highly requested but alas the BD gods were not kind. Uinversal had access to the materials and and as such, did the work for both Paramount and Universal. The result: a movie everyone wanted on Blu-ray Disc but with a not so fantastic transfer.

I suggest you get this title in your hands yourself and judge it on your own equipment. For many its the best we are going to get for now, for others its a "I aint' going to own this." Make up your own mind.

The winner for best technical EPIC FAIL goes to: Lionsgate. Thanks for the being the ONLY studio to put up a stupid EULA for the BD-Live enabled Crank 2: HIgh Voltage BEFORE the previews and menus. Hello! Blu-ray Disc is not software we buy and install, its a movie; put that EULA on the BD-Live web portal page.

The winner for smartest Digital Copy delivery system is: Sony. Finally, PSP only digital copies will be on the Blu-ray Disc itself. Elminating the need to include a second DVD-ROM for PSP compatible DCs and the need for a PC.

Other notable wins:

> Gremilins on BD thanks to Target.
> The Wizard of Oz BD being a truly hot seller thanks to a myriad of "retailer exclusives."
> Sony, Paramount, and Warner Brothers embracing DTS-HD Master Audio on more releases (Controversial win, yes but this is not the time to argue about it)
> Fox and MGM actually embracing decent pricing.

Other notable fails:

> Gojira getting shiftier treatment than Gladiator (again judge for yourself though)
> Disney still continuing with their higher pricing ($40 retail for catalogs that have old extras, $45 retail for new titles and catalogs with new extras)
> BD-Live still being used by a majority of studios to deliver "social networking" features instead of the promised "new extras.
> Fox and MGM going cheap with BD & DVD combo packs that feature a movie-only BD and an extras packed DVD.

There may be more here. This is all I can think of, right now.

Child's Play has a good transfer. It comes with a DVD version as well, but unlike most MGM blu-ray releases, the special features are on both the blu-ray and DVD. I suggest you buy this.

Freddy vs. Jason was released in September, and the transfer is nice.

Coraline is a good movie, and the picture and audio are top notch. Loaded with special features as well.

I suggest picking up all three titles.

Also if you are a South Park fan, the movie South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut comes on on blu-ray this Tuesday. The review is up and the picture and audio quality is supposed to be good, and there is a brand new commentary by Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Also if you are a Batman and Superman fan, then the new animated movie from DC called Batman & Superman: Public Enemies (which is based on the comic book) came out last Tuesday. Have yet to see this but the people on this forum said that it is pretty good. Picture and audio quality is not up there with other releases, but its still pretty good.

Don't believe all negative hype, Gladiator looks better then most let on. No, it's not perfect, but since Best Buy is running it on sale for $19.99 next week it might be worth picking up. Also, the review for Gremlins is right on. The video is seriously lacking and IMO down right horrible even for a movie of it's age. Ghostbusters looked better but still not great. If you're into computer animated movies Monsters vs Aliens is a good choice.

Semper Fi devil dog!!! i went to PI on 06-13-1994, graduated on 09-02-1994 (2nd rtbn, plt 2193 G Co) and did 8 yrs of service. the first few years are the hardest to endure with being a non-rate but it'll pay off.

as for the BD changes, all that i can say is that there are more of them. for a list, just to amazon.com and look up past release dates.

Well, Good luck at MCT and your A school. I've been in 5 years now and have 15 or so left... so maybe I'll see you around. The Marine Corps is smaller than you think (I will actually be going through Marine Combat Instructor School the same time are you are at MCT. Both schools are in San Onofre)

As for Blus. You need to check out The Wizard of Oz, Braveheart, and Gladiator. All are MUST haves

Picture quality isn't bad. Audio is lossy, but it's not bad. Never once jumped out at me and screamed "hate me for I am compressed and ugly sounding!"

Also: about Crank 2, don't mind the problems certain people have had. The movie is great and the quality is terrific. Definitely worth owning for anyone who enjoyed the first one.

You'll have to sift through what has been released over the last 3 months to see what may interest you.

A catalog title perhaps? Nothing has changed with those, rent first!

Some stuff came out, some didn't. (Kidding) I've only bought 3-4 over the last few months, and only plan on picking up 7-8 during October and November (that's actually a big burst for me).

Everybody's got different tastes and different must-haves. I've got plenty o' DVDs that need replacing on Blu.

I was happy with the look of Wizard of Oz, but was SEVERELY disappointed with the "5.1" Soundtrack. My surrounds weren't used at all, it seemed.

Looking forward to Contact, Charlie Brown Christmas, Love Actually, A Christmas Carol, and It's a Wonderful Life.

Still waiting for Amelie, Fear and Loathing, The Holy Grail, and The Big Lebowski.
