doesnt the fact that it is an IPS-Alpha panel imply that it is an LCD?

Yeah, you're right. I didn't even think about that. LOL. I added it to the Plasma thread.

I must have been mesmorized by the awesome picture, that I probably assumed it was a plasma.

Plus, if you have a window behind you, you can see what's going on outside at the same time!

(ie look at the really bad glare). I'm guessing the production model will have an anti-glare coating that will actually reduce those blacks a little bit.

Sure it looks nice now, but even Pioneer had a blacker model on show (last year?) that they didn't produce for the market. The 9G Kuro's were the closest they got, but still didn't match what they had originally tried to produce.
I just bought an ELITE two days ago... still haven't been able to plug the bad boy in lol

It only looks so good because of the reflective screen. I will take my LCD with a matte finish any day. If i want to see what is going on behind me, I will turn around, not have to look at my tv.

As someone pointed out on Engadget, the TV on the left has a matte screen and a glossy bezel. The new one has a matte bezel and a glossy finish. Marketing perhaps..?

Definitely marketing. Even my Panny plasma has a much better anti-glare solution than that. That's almost like a mirror.

Keep in mind that the panel on the left is very likely set to look as bad as possible - every manufacturer does this with their panels, even Pioneer did it with their unreleased sets compared to the 5020 models, people that own the 5020's had never seen them set up so poorly.

IPS = In Plane Switching - it is currently employed only on LCD models but from all accounts this is their PLASMA with IPS prototype. I guess we'll have to wait on official word from Panasonic to hear more. I wouldn't think plasma panels need any more work on the viewing angle, so I guess it's also logical that it wouldn't make sense this was a plasma too.

I'm confused.

The screen is very reflective, I'm sure it will change by the time the production version is released.

even though the left panel is turned to make a bad picture and the right the best as possible... it really show how bad the blacks are on the current pana plasma panels.....

You should have a coffee before you post.

If you think current Panny plasmas produce anything but deep, gorgeous blacks, you need coffee...or professional help.

I don't know what the panel on the left is, but I can tell you that Panny plasmas I've seen don't have that texture...the screen surface leads me to believe it's their current LCD...and all research I've done suggests the IPS Alpha (which is their name for the panel they currently offer in their LCD displays) is LCD.

That's because the XBR actually turns the panel off.

What was the ANSI?

The black levels on the V10 are 0.006fl
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=5430

ANSI is almost 4,000:1

I like watching content on my TV, not staring at a black panel...I think most people would feel the same way...and I'm not knocking the XBR8 because other than viewing angles and price tag it's an awesome set, but to suggest the full black level measurement at minimum luminance defines overall picture quality seems rather bizarre. There's nothing wrong with the black levels on the G10, they're 0.008fl, not 0.013fl.

extracted from HDTVtest.co.uk

TX-P42G10 Picture Performance
Black Level
We measured the calibrated black level on our Panasonic TX-P42G10 review unit to be 0.03 cd/m2

we measured the black level on the Panasonic TX-P42V10 to be 0.03 cd/m2.

Note: 1 fL = 3.42 cd/m2

from Home Theatre Magazine for G10

Full-On/Full-Off Contrast Ratio: 1,855:1

i have never seen an ANSI figure greater than the Full On / Off figure on any tv....

i am not saying the pana is a bad tv - they are great tv for their price but they just dont have deep black imo

As previously pointed out to you, the same people also tested the 46" G10's on/off cr to be over 3,000:1...given that there are NO DIFFERENCES whatsoever between the two sets I find this source to be extremely unreliable in this case, particularly when juxtaposed with every other Panasonic panel they've tested.

For further perusal I present HTM's review of the PZ800U model, which we know from EVERY source out there doesn't have the contrast ratio or the blacks of the G10 - http://hometheatermag.com/flat-panel...tv/index3.html

Full-On/Full-Off CONTRAST RATIO: 2,954:1

The calibrated ANSI test of the 800U was just under 2,000:1 while the G10 was around 3,800:1, as tested by D Nice and Chad, both ISF certified technicians, at AVS.

46"G10 - http://hometheatermag.com/flat-panel...tv/index3.html
Full-On/Full-Off Contrast Ratio: 3,150:1

You don't find it a little odd that they make no mention at all of the differences here between the 46" and the 42" panels?

65"V100 - http://hometheatermag.com/flat-panel...or/index5.html
Full-On/Full-Off Contrast Ratio: 6,302:1

As for the fl, don't the numbers you just posted show 0.008fl rather than 0.013fl?

0.03 cd/m2 = 0.008fl no?
