I have no choice!
I have a 52" Toshiba DLP that overscans. A lot! But as far as I can tell there's no way to stop it. It's irritating really. If I'm watching an HD broadcast, often only the top of the station logo in the corner is visible. Or if it's the news, the text crawl across the bottom is cut in half. |

Signal, are you maybe talking about a zoom mode as opposed to overscan? A lot of old sets have some overscan (under 5% is considered acceptable I believe) and there's no way to get rid of it. Personally, my set has absoluely zero overscan- I've tested it with the Spears and Musil disk that has 1 pixel steps.
Overscan doesn't mean you're not getting 1:1 pixel matching. It just means that some of the image is hidden by the bezel. |

I have a Panasonic with an option for overscan and an option for no overscan (size 1 and size 2). I just leave it on the overscan option. When I first got the tv, i would turn the overscan off when watching most tv and Blu-Rays but then turned it back on for some shows and the occaisional disc. It got to be too much of a hassle so now I just leave it on all the time.
Part of the reason is that I'm not sure the pixel shift works when there is no overscan turned on (since it's all 1:1, there's no way to shift the pixels). Plus, when watching 1.85:1 movies, the overscan lets it fill the screen top to bottom with minimal image cropping on the sides. |
