USA Oppo BDP-83

YEA !!! I just recieved my Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray Player and I must say that it is one very well packed unit(..and they even supplied an HDMI cable)...this thing just smacks of quality! I hope it doesn't let me down!

FYI, It is now shipping from Amazon with the Spears and Munsil High Definition Benchmark, Blu-Ray Edition and AIX Records "Audio Calibration Disc".

Sadly though I will not get to integrate it into my system till next weekend due to out of town traveling and work commitments.

...till then.

Pioneer Elite SC-27
Marantz SR 6004(Newest) or 8002(Best under 2K)
Denon AVR-4310CI

You could also look at entry level seperates from Emotiva, Outlaw, and other internet direct manufacturer's.

The manual is correct - it's a limitation due to bandwidth and copy protection, not just of the BDP-83 but any Blu-ray, SACD, or DVD-A player.

You might also consider trying the multichannel analog output. It has a really good analog section, and all of those formats can be decoded internally and output via analog. A set of short cables from MonoPrice or Blue Jeans will cost a lot less than a new receiver.

sharpie, i didn't see anywhere where you stated the brand receiver you had. but, if you do have one that has HDMI inputs just get an HDMI switcher like this one from monoprice (i have it and it works just fine, even works with my harmony one remote)
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2
problem solved, now go and get yourself your new oppo and have a good time. Oh yeah, don't forget to get an HDMI cable to go from the output of the switcher into one of your inputs on your receiver. whatever was in that receiver HDMI input, simply put it into one of the inputs of the switcher and your rolling!

one more thing, i love my SACD's in DSD (native format) you'll love it too. don't forget about the DVD-A either!

hope that helps!

You beat me to it. I was just about to suggest the same monoprice HDMI switch.

Amazingly better. Unfortunately, I'm afraid my 8 year old is coming down with it. He said his troat was starting to hurt which was my first symptom.

USA My System

OOPS! I forgot to post what I currently have...

I do not have a very elaborate system and I can see now that it is showing its age, here are the pieces...

TV - Sharp Aquos LC65D93U(..HDMI 1.2a)
A/V Reciever - Sony STR-DA5ES(..no HDMI)
HD-DVD - Toshiba HD-XA2(..HDMI 1.??)
Blu-Ray - Sony PS 160 GB, Samsung BD-P1400(...soon to be replaced with the Oppo)
Speakers - Sony 5.1 SA-VE835ED
Remote - Harmony 1000(...my first universal remote that truly replaces all the other remotes)

I guess I have some upgrading to do. I currently have an HDMI(..Octava with TOS/Link routing) switch but I think I am still in the same boat as far as the audio stream goes because I am using digital fiber to the Sony reciever.

Once you get the Oppo, you can do Multi-Channel Audio out to your receiver. Have the Oppo do the HD Audio decoding and you are good to go. Just run HDMI to your TV for the HD video.

Your list includes three sources with HDMI outputs: PS3, HD-XA2, and Blu-ray player. I don't know how many inputs your HDMI switch has, but I'd guess it has at least three - so you can still use it to switch video to your TV and use the multichannel analog audio connection from BDP-83 to the receiver. Your Harmony can automate control of the HDMI switch for you, and I suspect you already have it set up that way.

Got my Oppo a couple of hours ago. Very nicely packed. My wife sat down next to me on the couch while i opened it up, i handed her the black box that contains the cords and remote and she said it felt like she was opening a box of jewelry Got it set up and going to watch a movie later on. Seems like it is a very good machine.

The Octave has 4 inputs(HDMI-Toslink pairs) and 1 output (HDMI-Toslink pair). As of now the HDMI goes to the TV and the fiber goes to the TV function of the reciever, that way the reciever stays on the TV function all the time...unless I listen to the radio. The Harmony manages these current devices and switching perfectly.

I appreciate everyones suggestions on hookups, but until I can get a newer reciever and better speakers I'm stuck. I suspect that even though I won't be getting the full benefit from the soundtracks from this player that it will still sound excellant considering the limitations of my setup.
