Gladiator, Mission Impossible, Michael Clayton, Silence of the Lambs, True Romance, Interview with the Vampire, Sleepy Hollow, 28 Days Later, Enemy at the Gates, Training Day
All of these movies and others got bad reviews on their transfers, but will the studios try to correct their mistake or will they just leave as is? Or maybe this is how the film was supposed to look like? I know with Donnie Darko they did the best they could, it wasn't filmed to be seen as a bluray. Personally I feel bummed about Gladiator and Interview with the Vampire the most. The Interview dvd release is horrible and I would do anything for a serious upgrade and Gladitor, I was looking forward to owning it but then I heard all these horrible reviews about the transfer so I was a bit disappointed. Thoughts? EDIT: Mods could you move this to bluray discussion? I made a mistake. |

Personally, I would re-buy Gladiator, Sleepy Hollow and Training Day. The transfers are less then desirable, but IMO they are still upgrades over their DVD predecessors. I don't expect every movie in my collection to have top notch PQ, but Id like a few of them to be re-released with a better a transfer. I understand that the source material plays a huge roll in the final BD product, but Gladiator should/could have been so much better than it turned out.

Personally i want Interview, Gladiator, and True Romance. those three deserve ridiculously amazing upgrades!
i wish studios would just put out nothing but greatness every time. but i know thats the name of the game, trying to eventually get people to double dip |

I wouldn't hold my breath on this. It will be 5-10 years before any of these are remastered. Gladiator sold well and there is no economic reason for the studio to remaster the video anytime soon, especially since many people would demand a FREE upgrade.

True so would that give the studio a reason to reissue the discs out to anyone that bought it and then restock stores with new copies?

Yup, seems unlikely that there will be re-releases anytime soon because there is no economic reason to do so. Still, I would love to see good versions of House of Flying Daggers, Training Day, and Gladiator. Oh, and Glory, which I own, but think is the single worst PQ of any I've yet to see.

I'll preface this by saying that I LOVE the film and could not wait to get it--I bought it right when it came out. After a half hour of watching it, I stopped my blu-ray player, popped it out, and actually checked the disk to see if it was a blu and not a dvd. I've seen the dvd upscaled on my player and thought it looked every bit as good. I'm aware that this site thought the PQ was great and that is one reason I bought it right away. The problem with some reviews here is that the reviews say "this was the way the film was intended to look" or "this is the best it has looked." These statements basically mean that the film does not look good but couldn't look better bc of the source material. That is all well and good, but that does not mean the film looks good. I found the film to be the softest of any blu I've watched (i've seen over 100), with little detail. There was a distinct smokiness to most scenes, which yes, was intended. The film also had the least amount of depth of any blu I've seen. The flatness of the picture was astounding to me. I've seen blus with 3.0 and 3.5 PQ have much more detail and depth than this film. Also, the sound was horrible. For a war film, you would expect the explosions to sound big and to be immersed during battle scenes. However, watching this film was like watching a comedy film--it had that little surround involvement. I cannot convey my disappointment with both PQ and AQ. The reviews absolutely baffle me. |
