Angry Why are the new Blu-ray players being delayed?

Sony is supposed to be the torch-bearer of Blu-ray, yet they have really dropped the ball in my opinion. Now we're hearing early December for release of their player. Pioneer maybe after January sometime. How about Sharp, LG, and Philips? No announcements, no explanations.

Originally the launch was supposed be this past summer. I was planning to buy the BDP-S1 in early August . . . September . . . then October . . . November . . . now December!

Right now their format launch and PR have scored a big fat "F". I wonder if they realize that the early adopters' perception of them or Blu-ray is in the toilet right now?

I'd be interested in hearing others' opinions on this and especially if anyone has any inside information as to "WHY".

Here are my theories:
  1. Blue laser diodes are in short supply
  2. They can't yet produce a bug-free player and they want to get it right
  3. The Playstation 3 is Sony's big money-maker and everything else is secondary
  4. The delays are caused by compatibility testing - BD-50, BD-Java, new HD sound formats and currently released titles
  5. The problem is with Pioneer, who can't meet their production commitments
  6. Some serious flaw has been found with the Blu-ray format and they're looking for workarounds

That last item is only conjecture. I really doubt there is any show-stopper at this point. BD-50 is successful, all studios (including SONY) have produced excellent quality discs using all the codecs. New features like BD-Java and HD audio formats should be hashed out at this point.

If BD was "Sonly only" thing I wouldn't even think about it. And based on past experience with misinformation and hype surrounding PS2 and PS3 I never trust their announcements and promices.
Overall, IMHO it is Sony's fault and not Pioneer's, though I might be wrong.

All of your points are true, except 6.
We have seen Blu-Ray at its best.

Can you provide link on where you have seen that BDP-S1 will be delayed till December?

Thumbs down

My reply to sonystyle.com Why the **** is the blu-ray player being delayed until december now? That's like the third delay if not more. Sony had better give me a discount or something or I might just say **** YOU to the blu-ray disc association and go buy a hd dvd player since their organization seems to have their act together. I ordered mine from amazon.com so I hope to hear from you,Sony, soon or I guess hd dvd has my money! I mean if this **** is the case I might as well wait for second gen to buy. Oh wait at this pace that won't be until 2009.

Well Vick, I guess your upset by the above entry. The notation there on SonyStyle relates to orders that will be placed from the present forward. Dealers that have orders in now will get its allocated distribution as promised on or before November 15th. Nationwide, every dealer will only be allocated a certain amount of the first BDP-S1's, until the production run is completed for the December availability, through us (the dealer) or SonyStyle (direct). What were you expecting - head of the line priveledge ? .

Jim

Wow, you need to seriously calm down. You act like that Sony player is the only game in town. What about the Elite? What about the solid Panny player that you can buy right now? What about the fixed Samsung at a reduced price? Hell, what about a PS3?

These are the kinds of needless and emotional overreactions that I see around that are very dismaying.

Have you been spending too much time reading AVS FUD or something?

Calm down!

I'll tell you: If you're this easily angered, I can't imagine what you would do if you got one of those buggy "laptop masquerading as a home theater product" HD-DVD players in your house.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Vicky baby....just buy the sammy, trust me you'll love it with the new firmware, and you'll still have plenty left in your pocket! enough to even swoop an HD-A1 and still come in cheaper than the panny!

Except he should use that saved money on more BD discs vs. buying an HD-A1.

But I didn't order mine directly from Sony I did the amazon deal to get the discount so I wonder how many they are getting/how many people I have to fight over with the limited supply. If I ever order something like this again online I don't think I'll do it online amazon.com has never had a release date for the bdp-s1. So I wonder if they are way down on the todem pole or what. I mean I might as well wait for the second round of players if this is the pace. As far as the pioneer I can't find anywhere that has it in stock or pre-order.

Given that Vick had actually preordered the Sony BD player from Amazon (presumably long ago) I don't blame him one bit for being pissed! I know I would be! (but this isn't to say that I endorse his use of profanity here either).
