Default best audio for ps3 blu ray movies

Hi, I havent used my ps3 in a little while and I noticed after updating it I now have a bitstream option in the ps3 audio settings. I'm using hdmi out from the ps3 to a onkyo 605 receiver, do I want to use pcm linear or bitstream for the audio? When I picked bistream i got a little message at the bottom saying something like "some audio will not be played if bistream used" or something like that. The bluray i was using was quantum of solace

If your receiver can decode the high def codecs set it to bitstream if not set it to pcm have a good day.

If this is one of the new slim models, you can use bitstream or PCM. Bitstream means the decoding is done in the receiver, and PCM means the decoding is done by the PS3.

If it's an older "fat" model, then you still need to use PCM. The older models can only bitstream Dolby Digital and regular DTS, and I think two channel PCM. The only way to hear the lossless audio codecs with the older models is to use the PCM setting. This is a hardware limitation of the older models, so no firmware update can ever allow you to bitstream the lossless audio codecs on the older models of PS3s.

Stay with PCM, you'll get lossless audio that way. If you bitstream you'll get the lossy core () but your receiver will say something like Dolby or DTS ().

Stay PCM.

ok great, thank you everyone. Just wanted to make sure i still had the best settings. Another question for ps3 owners though, when i turn on my ps3 it has the wavy background but its all sparkly and the sparkles are like animated, is there a way to use that as the xmb background? I tried going through the settings and looking at the psn theme store and all that...

PCM all the way.

That is the only way to get lossless or uncompressed audio.

Looks like such a gem of a spot mate! I love the look of those big old trees running along the banks.
Great to see the bass are still in there growing big and fat!
