I would love in-movie chat. I also wish for XMB access during BD playback (not necessarily dvd) and for it to say what movie we're watching where it normally says game playing (maybe this could be turned off in settings so those watching chick flicks or something could hide it ). If I was signing on and seeing a friend watching TDK or something, I might pop in and chat while watching. That would be sweeeeeet.

That's fine as long as they keep the default to getting signed out when watching a disc. I rarely want to be interrupted in the middle of a movie (doubly true if I'm watching a rifftrax, no one wants to experience "unsynced rage").

Yeah I completely understand not wanting interruption, so being able to change settings would be nice.

That's weird.

I read somewhere (after posting this thread) that someone said that Xbox removed the ability to talk once you're dead.

So if you get killed, you can't help anyone in the game via the crossgame/chat if you're both in the same game or something.

And that they put you on the same teams if you're using the crosschat thing, or the next game they do.

I dunno....

definitely a possible breeding ground for cheating.
For x-live you also have party chat...which can have up to 8 people in any form (dashboard, watching a movie, games, etc) that is on x-live...so if you have friends that are in your party as well as in your game they can die but be able to talk and of course tell you everything that has happened...Also as one mentioned about the cheating...Foolz have used this method of chat to of course cheat or ruin the multiplayer experience...so its a double edge sword...because to me it is fun playing multi while chatting with others that are just chillen watching a movie or playing another game...downside you might get people you don't know or don't like in the same party as you because it's someone else friend...its great when used correctly and sucks when its not...

Found an amusing thread on gaf, apparently the retail demo unit firmware in every Gamestop has had an interesting icon to represent the chatroom for a couple months now. Note the outline of a headset in front of the usual keyboard icon...

crappy photo 1:

Someone else mentioned that it's the same icon the devkits use for cross-game voice chat. I'm wondering if Sony's holding this (and hopefully other) features to steal some of the thunder from the (so far lame) fall Xbox update.

I can tell you that the solution I have seen is a universal party chat system similar to the one in XBL. It works in basically the same way, I think game launching from party chat is in or will be added at a later date.

This isn't cross game chat, it is a universal party chat system that works via XMB and by extension in all games, even Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix...

I think the next step is to add a universal invite system to the very same chat rooms, and extend that into it's own system so you can join friends' games easily.

There are other improvements planned for PSN, but these probably won't hit until around March/April next year. If this year was PSN = XBL, next year will be PSN > XBL...

That is great news. I'm looking forward to seeing what other features may accompany this update. Do you think there will be other additions or will it primarily be an update bring cross-game chat?

Thanks for sharing as always Max

The firmware roadmap I have seen doesn't really give specific features for specific updates, just general guidelines for when a feature will be finished and ready to be added into an update, that's why I can't really ever give specific dates for when stuff will be added and which firmware version they will come in. That kind of stuff is much later in the day and will be leaked by retail or the press, it doesn't interest me enough to find out which specific firmware stuff comes in is what it comes down to really!

I take it this is the same as Party Chat. If so this is GREAT. To be honest I have found voice communication that is built into certain PS3 games to really really suck. Specifically Battlefield 1943. A party chat system that wouldn't rely on the in game chat would be AWESOME! I generally dont see this problem on XBL as they seem to have a more robust system in general and of course they do have party chat.

The party chat system is on xbl as well, but most of the games I play allow you to chat when dead anyways so there is no effect.

Well that makes perfect sense. Sounds like there is a great deal more to look forward to in the coming months. With the onslaught of titles coming, I doubt that I will have too much time to notice when which features are coming and when.

Normally I'd caution that MS isn't standing still with Xbox Live, and PSN > XBL might be a moving target, but if all MS can do for this year's update is apologize for the lack of a web browser, I'm not too worried.

Btw, is there any hope for linux on the Slim? At the moment, the linux PS3 community seems almost dead quiet, can't tell if everyone's either picked their own route to hack the hypervisor or if everyone (including at least one corporate contract) dropped all their Cell projects. Other than that, everything I'm excited about was leaked by Sega, and it's just a matter of time (I hope).

Is there any validity to some of the speculation I've heard that such a chat system might afford some players an unfair advantage in some multiplayer scenarios (i.e. still able to communicate even though a player is 'killed' in a match, etc.)?

According to a moderator on gaf, via the actual gaming-age website (that gaf used to be a part of), cross-game voice chat has been delayed, probably until 2010.

Cross game voice chat, known as system voice chat, was scheduled to be included in a PlayStation 3 Firmware Update (probably 3.10) "before the end of 2009". Unfortunately, we've just received unofficial word that the feature has been delayed, presumably into 2010.

There was no specific reason given for the postponement of the much requested XMB feature at this point. Although 2010 was mentioned, no new date or window of deployment has been provided at this time.

We'll keep you updated if anything changes.
