Default Bungie leaves Microsoft

taken from here

A friend of mine who has someone close to them that works at Bungie has just been dying to tell me a secret about their future. Since the NDA officially expire today the sent me and email with the details. I have full faith in this contact.

The email is as follows :

"So heres my big secret. You should google Bungie + Microsoft + separation this week.
You know that big ol BILLION dollar franchise Bungie has created for Microsoft, to show their appreciate Microsoft is letting Bungie leave. Of course Microsoft gets to keep all rights to the Halo franchise, but as today Bungie no longer part of Microsoft. Ask anyone who works there to search the global address book, they're no longer in there. Microsoft was supposed to release the press release today but if they wait till the 10/6 the impact wont effect the quarterly results. However today is the actual official date and the day the NDAs expire, however you still didn't hear this from me."

"Apparently MS just wants Bungie to make Halo for the rest of their natural days, and Bungie doesn't like how MS is constantly trying to "handle" everything they do; the way they market their games, the way they interact with their fans (basically the fact that they do appreciate their fans), and how stingie they are with the profits (comparable to the rest of the industry). So as of today they are their own independent entity. They'll probably make Halo 4 for Microsoft, however hey are also free to create new intellectual properties for whatever system they want. (Even though they prefer the xbox platform)"

"What a way to say thank you."

--------------------------------

So we could be seeing Bungie titles for the PS3 in the future (no Halo though as explained above) - M$ seem to be alienating everyone who develops games for them these days after what happened to Bizarre Creations 'PGR4' too it wouldn't surprise me if everyone went PS3 exclusive! (here's hoping)

TBH I never understood why people like Halo to begin with... I also have my doubts about this rumor, if Bungie is making a huge amount of money for MS why would MS just drop them? I'll believe it when I see it...

Halo doesn't do anything for me either TBH - while on the subject though I found this interesting - apparantly Halo 3 doesn't run natively in HD.

taken from here

Earlier this week, a Beyond3D user claimed to have discovered that Halo 3 doesn't run natively in high definition. Using his HDTV's 1:1 mapping function, he discovered that Halo 3's vertical resolution was only 640; that's 80 pixels less than the lowest HD resolution, which is 720p (1280x720).

The latest Bungie Weekly Update has Luke Smith confessing that in fact, Halo 3 doesn't run natively at 720p like all other Xbox 360 games:

Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers – both of which render at 1152x640 pixels. The reason we chose this slightly unorthodox resolution and this very complex use of two buffers is simple enough to see – lighting. We wanted to preserve as much dynamic range as possible – so we use one for the high dynamic range and one for the low dynamic range values. Both are combined to create the finished on screen image.

Last I checked, someone would have to buy Bungie from M$ for this to happen; they'd also have to be willing to sell of course.

Also: I've never known Microsoft as being known for appreciating their fans, but why would Bungie call that a bad thing?

I remember another rumor started here from a guy who "had a friend on the inside with some really big news". That turned out well.

i am not holding my breath; the rumor is also on bungie's site: www.bungie.net. it is neither being confirmed or denied. if bungie was wise they would not renew their contract and design games for all consoles and pc.

p.s. halo is the property of M$ not bungie.

Microsoft responds to Bungie split rumours

Software giant denies any announcement

Microsoft has distanced itself from rumours that it will be relinquishing control of wholly-owned Halo developer Bungie, but stopped short of a categorical denial.

"There's been no such announcement," a spokesperson told Eurogamer.net. "We continue to celebrate the tremendous success of the global phenomenon that is Halo 3."

The claim came from a reader blog linked to the Seattle Post-Intelligence. The author claims to have heard from a friend with links inside Bungie that an announcement on the separation was imminent.

The author of the blog post, Jacob Metcalf, is not employed by the Seattle Post-Intelligence newspaper, which has consistently distanced itself from user-posted information in blogs.

The reasons cited for the split were Microsoft's expectation that Bungie dedicate itself to making further Halo games, and Bungie's frustration at Microsoft's interference in its practices.

However, in an interview with Edge magazine last year, Bungie executives stated their intention to expand the studio into multiple teams. This would allow it to develop new intellectual property alongside Halo.

The story suggests that Bungie will become an independent studio, and may continue to work for Microsoft as well as create games for other platforms. But it offers no explanation of the financial details of such a buyout - as it stands, Bungie is owned 100 per cent by Microsoft.

Well, it's global in that it's made a powerful presence in America, Europe, and Australia; just not in East Asia.

1UP's story explains best why the press are suspicious that something may actually be happening.

It's no good holding onto a developer if the talented staff that make that developers name move on because they're not happy.

Rumor: Bungie Is Leaving Microsoft

By now, you must have heard the rumor of Bungie leaving Microsoft that started at 8Bit Joystick.com. Well, we can't provide further info now (we'd put our sources in trouble) but we're going to tell you that it is more complex than simply Bungie leaving Microsoft or Microsoft letting Bungie go.

There will be an official announcement this week, definitely before October 12th...
It doesn't say much but it makes you wonder that there might actually be something to this. Just not on as grand a scale maybe. Wait a second. Didn't somebody post something about a big announcement Oct 12th? Meh, screw it. I'll just sit here and wait to see how this plays out.

I think this is a load of you know what but if there is hostility between them don't be surprised to see some big changes. MS owns Bungie but not the employees and MS can't make them stay. Look at Rare and Nintendo, Rare made Goldeneye and Perfect Dark (Zero never came out as it was too horrible to ever think of again) but when the creators started to disagree with Nintendo they left and formed Free Radical, which sent Rare and it's founders into a downward spiral. Bungie could seperate them selves from MS or the employees could leave and found another studio, either way MS had better hope not because with out Bungie they have nothing.

Me neither, I rented the game once for my PC years back just to see what all the fuss was about. It was ok but for the life of me I just don't get it. Maybe it was because it was the best game on the original xbox?

Bungie should take the franchise and release it on the PS3.

Microsoft owns Bungie there there is no way for the company to part each other unless there is a spinoff or microsoft is stupid enough to sell it to someone.
