Talking Which Company Is Movie Evil? Sony Or Toshiba

This topic is for a bit of fun, but can't say much about Sony. But wasn't Toshiba involved in violating the CoCom agreement by selling some technology to the Soviets to make their submarines quieter?

True. In fact there is a movie in the works about this incident. The working title is supposed to be "The Hunt for The Toshiba October" or something to that effect.

Will this be released on both formats or a blu-ray exclusive?

I actually hated Sony ( did not really have a reason either, now I think their great) for a while before Blu, I have a Toshiba HDTV which allows me to enjoy Blu, so I would say neither. I would not even say Universal because the have stuck to their guns the evil ones are Paramount who jumped at the $ 150 million.

I've never really had much luck with Sony products, save my Playstations. While I did have to replace my PS1 & PS2, they served me well for WAY too many hours. But every other Sony product I had, TV, walkmans, discmans . . . always seemed to crap out, despite Sony's price premium. But, as their tv's have gotten better (my next upgrade will be to a 70-some inch XBR) and the Playstation 3 has actually lived up to what I never thought it could (the true center of your living room entertainment), I have renewed faith in Sony. I still like Toshiba products though, my DLP prior to the Samsung was Toshiba, and any DVD player I or a family member has bought has been Toshiba, and they always last. I'll still buy their products, but I won't have anything to do with HD-DVD.

i have been through a number of sets and many CE manufacturers when it comes to my electronics. that being said, i have never purchased a tosh because they didn't offer a product i found adaquete to my needs. i am on my second sony TV, first ps3, first ps2, and a DVD player. the dvd player was an early '97 and it still works great. my first sony t.v. had a tube issue so it was replaced with what i have now and i couldn't be happier. the ps2worked flawlessly until it got ps3 envy... and it was a first two month ps2. i think sony makes a good product and i will recomend them any day of the week.

In Australia at least, Toshiba's electronics (except their laptops) have been crap! I sold their stuff and I was on the frontlines for a while and I got to see and experience their QUALITY for myself!

They released a HD PVR known as the HDDj35, it was the WORST piece of electronic equipment I have ever sold, use and had to put up with. Nothing but problems from day one go to http://www.cnet.com.au/dvdpvr/pvr/0,...0005483,00.htm read the users comments! no firmware upgrade could fix this crap!

Their HD set top boxes were rubbish, overheated, unreliable and painfully slow channel changing.

Their LCD tv's were and are still generally crap, cheap tacky remote controls, overpriced, ugly user interfaces, average performance and very mediocre and cheap styling.

They went from making good quality DVD players to shitty cheap made in china units that were horribly unreliable and offered very poor performance, once upon a time they had QUALITY dvd players. The SD350e was a semi-decent dvd player when it actually worked!

So far i've only used one of their HD-DVD players, it kept locking up every now and then and had a strange issue playing back normal dvd's at times.

It's called the Toshiba-Kongsberg scandal and it sure as hell pissed off the US Navy.

Isn't this the same issue that caused some U.S. Congressman to physically bash Toshiba equipment on the Capitol steps for a large television audience? And there was talk of a complete Toshiba import ban, that is, until a small army of lobbyists descended on D.C. and Congress somehow felt it in their interest to drop the issue.

you are indeed correct. i still remember pictures of congressmen beating toshiba vcrs to death with sledgehammers.

toshiba was involved in selling (i believe) state of the art propeller milling machinery to the soviets, presumably allowing them to get their upcoming akula-class subs to the level of quietness that they are.

regardless, it's hard to say toshiba or sony are more evil than the other. they've both done some pretty ugly things, but in my book, at least, toshi holds the crapper spot for putting the free world at a little bit more risk for the sake of profit.

No big deal, but that was Toshiba Machine Co., not Toshiba proper. As much as I hate Toshiba for bringing about this format war, I doubt they paid that much attention to what their subsidiary was doing.

I don't believe in "evil" but Sony has been very "good" to me.

I bought a release day PS3 and put it under the tree. When I opened it on the 25th .. there was a free Blu Ray movie in there to start my collection. When I plugged it in there was a free PS3 game up on the PS Store to kick start my gaming (plus lots of fun demos, traliers and other stuff.)

I love my Sony V6 headphones but part of the fun it when I watch concert videos or the occasional making of documentaries for a movie all the people working in the studios or on stage have the same headphones. I never get tired of that. Just confirms while they may not be the "best" they are the industry standard.

My Sony SACD player delivers Dark Side of the Moon in 5.1 making my Home Theater an even funner place to be.

My Sony VPHG70 is a dream come true. I wanted one for years and bought one then re-built it with new parts from Sony directly.

I'm in love with Trinitron monitors and TV's and SxRD looks to be the next step in TV Evolution.

I can't comment on Evil but sony has been "good" to me.

-Brian

There's that evil Sony again. Innovating. Kicking ass. Setting a new standard. Coming out to the market with something bleeding edge first...

Damn you, Sony!
