Question Help me please :)

Hey everyone

Just wanna start off my apologizing in advance if this has already been posted somewhere, I just wanted to get the question up.

First off, I DON'T HAVE SPEAKERS. Just the TV (32" Samsung 1080p).

Some blurays I watch (eg. The Godfather) have the dialog the same volume as the other sound (eg. footsteps, moving chairs, etc.) making it hard to hear what the characters are saying over said sounds. However, some discs, like Burn After Reading sound fantastic and the dialog is crisp throughout.

I'm just wondering if there is anyway I can make the dialog louder and the other sounds quieter? As I say, some discs are fine, some are bearable and then some are just horrible. I had a fiddle with the sound settings on the player (Samsung bdp1600) but can't tell if they've had any effect. Something about PCM, PCM downsampling, bit-re-encode....it's all jibberish to me!!!

I don't understand sound

I would love to buy speakers but don't have the money at the moment, having just bought the tv, player and discs.

Thanks a bunch in advance, hope you understand my question and I look forward to hearing back

lets break it down to different possibilities.

Source - it might not even be your speakers, or your settings, but maybe how it was encoded. some disc have great audio mixes, others sadly are not. im also assuming you are using your display units speakers to listen to, and may consider using the 2 channel audio instead.

Settings on your source player - might have a night mode? as much as we dont like using them this might help with the dialogues for you.

Settings on your display unit - maybe its in 'surround' mode? or SAP mode? sometimes, and i prefer not using it, can cause too much 'spatial' effects on it.

Just 2 cents. sorry, busy as well at work, i do want to try to help...

It's funny you posted this, I was watching Zack & Miri last night I had the same issue. I find that a couple blu's I own do not have balanced audio.

The Watchmen is another one that is bad for that. Dialog is almost muted and everything else is shaking the house.

Id look to set the player to output PCM (vs bitstream) and you should also see something like "downmix", I'd set that to ON (or YES, whichever), and see how that does for you.

Dynamic Compression = On

...as well as PCM downmix. TV is stereo anyway.
